Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for October 5, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Alex Ovechkin Debuts for Capitals<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2005:<\/strong> The &#8220;Great Eight&#8221; makes his first appearance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals<\/a>. Ovechkin is the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/06\/26\/hockey-history-capitals-take-alex-ovechkin\/\" target=\"_self\"> first pick of the 2004 NHL Draft<\/a> is the first Caps player to score twice in his debut. The Russian winger&#8217;s goals help Washington to a 3-2 victory over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bluejackets\/\" target=\"_self\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a>. Little did sports pundits know how special he would become and how he has affected odds like those at <a class=\"gmail-in-cell-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.casino-online-canada.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">casino-<wbr \/>online-<wbr \/>canada.<wbr \/>ca<\/a> ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Those goals are the first of his 52 that he&#8217;ll score in his rookie season. Ovechkin takes the Calder Trophy for the league&#8217;s top rookie. He also makes the NHL First-Team for the first three seasons.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1932:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> play their first game under that name. Detroit had been known as the Cougars and the Falcons in their first six seasons in the NHL. The game also debuts the Winged Wheel logo that the team is synonymous with.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> Hockey comes to the Mile High City as the Colorado Rockies play their first game since relocating from Kansas City. <strong>Larry Skinner<\/strong> scores the team&#8217;s first goal in a 4-2 win over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. The team relocates east to become the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/devils\/\" target=\"_self\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> six years later. They tie their first game, 3-3, with the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\"> Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1983: Wayne Gretzky<\/strong> starts his record 51-game scoring streak with a goal and an assist for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers.<\/a> Gretzky powers the Oilers to a 5-4 win over the Maple Leafs and would get a point in each game until January 28.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steve Yzerman<\/strong> gets his first goal in a 6-6 tie with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_self\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> while <strong>Marcel Dionne <\/strong>reaches another milestone.
