It was announced that Dallas Stars<\/a> defenceman Andrej Sekera<\/a><\/strong> to a two-year deal worth $3 million. The contract carries a salary cap hit of $1.5 million.<\/p>\n

Andrej Sekera Re-Signs With Dallas<\/h2>\n

The 34-year old defenceman is entering his 15th season in the NHL. Sekera was originally selected in the third round, 71st overall by the Buffalo Sabres<\/a> in the 2004 NHL Draft. During his time in the league, Sekera has played for five teams including the Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>, Los Angeles Kings<\/a>, Edmonton Oiler<\/a>s and most recently the Dallas Stars<\/a>. Sekera came to the Stars during the 2019 off-season signing a one-year deal with the team.\u00a0In 57 games this season, Sekera recorded eight points (two goals and six assists). He mostly played as a third-pairing defenceman for the Stars on their run to the Stanley Cup Final. In the 27 games for the Stars this past post-season, Sekera recorded just one assist.<\/p>\n

For his career, Sekera has 244 points (47 goals and 197 assists) in 764 regular-season games. Sekera added five points (two goals and three assists) in 46 playoff games.<\/p>\n

What Lies Ahead<\/h3>\n

It was interesting to see if the Stars bring back the defenceman for next season or let him during free agency. Sekera has the skill set to play an all-around game. It is tough to label him as either a stay-at-home defenseman, a puck-mover or a shutdown presence. as a left-handed shot, Sekera can play the right or the left side. While he is not overly physical or flashy, he is very effective. Just look at how well he played for the Stars in the playoffs in their run to the Stanley Cup Final. Being an older defenceman in the league, playing on the third pair suits him the best. The main concern for Sekera is injuries. During his time with the Oilers, he only played 60 games the final two seasons before his contract was bought out. But as we saw with the Stars he is still an effective player in the right role.<\/p>\n
