Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for October 2, featuring Ray Bourque<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n

Ray Bourque Scores Most Goals by Defenceman<\/h3>\n

1999:<\/strong> The Boston Bruins<\/a> blueliner scores his 386th career goal in a 3-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>. He passes Paul Coffey<\/a><\/strong> on the all-time list for most goals by a defenceman. Bouruqe’s goal is the only one allowed by Arturs Irbe<\/a><\/strong> for the Hurricanes.<\/p>\n

The Montreal native finishes with 410 career goals in his Hall of Fame career.<\/a> That is still the most of any defenceman in league history. He retires in 2001 after winning a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche.<\/a><\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1955:<\/b> Detroit Red Wings<\/a> forward Dutch Reibel<\/a><\/strong> sets an All-Star Game record of 10 shots in the 3-1 win over the league All-Stars.<\/span><\/p>\n

1991:<\/strong> The Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> name forward Rick Tocchet<\/a><\/strong> as their new team captain. Tocchet is traded to the in-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> later in the season.<\/p>\n

1999:<\/strong> The Atlanta Thrashers<\/a> lose their first regular season game in team history, 4-1, to the New Jersey Devils<\/a>. Thrashers’ captain Kelly Buchberger<\/a><\/strong> scores in front of the sellout crowd of 18,545, but Martin Brodeur<\/a><\/strong> stops 26 shots. <\/span><\/p>\n

Kevin Weekes<\/a><\/strong>‘ career-opening 15 game winless streak ends in the Vancouver Canucks<\/a> 2-1 win over the New York Rangers<\/a>. Weekes stops 32 shots after going 0-13-2 in his first 15 starts.<\/p>\n

Sean Burke<\/a><\/strong> gets his 200th career NHL victory in the Phoenix Coyotes<\/a> 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues. <\/a><\/p>\n

2000:<\/strong> The Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> send defenceman Bryan McCabe<\/a><\/strong> to the Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>. Toronto gets defenceman Alexander Karpotsev<\/strong> in return.<\/p>\n

2009:<\/b> Ville Koistinen<\/a><\/strong> wows his home country with a goal and shootout-winner in the Florida Panthers<\/a>‘ 4-3 win over the Blackhawks. Koistinen is from Oulu, Finland and roofs the winning shot over Cristobal Huet<\/a> at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki.<\/span><\/p>\n

Paul Kariya<\/a><\/strong> scores twice as the Blues’ 4-3 victory over the Red Wings. This game was play in Stockholm as part of the Premiere Series.<\/p>\n

2013: Mikael Samuelsson<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and Pavel Datsyuk<\/a><\/span><\/strong> score 36 seconds apart in the first period for Detroit in its first game in the Eastern Conference since the NHL’s realignment in 1993-94. The goals power the Red Wings in their 2-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres<\/a>.<\/p>\n
