He may only have had 10 assists but his play in the defensive zone was top-notch throughout his time there. DeMelo was even promoted to the top pairing during the playoffs because of his strong play. He played a little over 65 minutes against the Calgary Flames in the qualifying round and his xGA (expected goals against) was just 1.71, according to Natural Stat Trick. There was just nothing going on in the defensive zone while he was on the ice. He also had a 55.14 CF percent during that series with the Flames.

DeMelo can also move the puck up the ice very well, which will continue to be a great asset for the Jets. Before he was with the Jets, he was spending time with the Ottawa Senators for a season and a half. During the 2018–19 season, he had four goals and 22 points for Ottawa. His 22 points in a season was a career-high at the time and still is going into this next season. Before that, he played his first three seasons in the NHL with the San Jose Sharks.

What This Means Going Forward

This should be one of the more underrated signings during the offseason and it makes Winnipeg’s defence much stronger going into next season. The third pairing is the ideal role for him but DeMelo has the ability to move up and down the lineup at will, especially given the Jets’ need for defence.

Main Photo:

Embed from Getty Images;

The Winnipeg Jets decided to re-sign Dylan DeMelo after he was outstanding for them when he got traded there last season.
