He did not have his worst season ever but it was not especially good. The former sixth-round pick posted a .895 save percentage and 3.28 goals-against-average. That is a significant decrease from the .925 and 2.52 from 2018-19. He saw almost five fewer shots per game but did not make the most of his workload. The Jets were lucky that Connor Hellebuyck was so outstanding this season. Otherwise, they would have had a much harder time with the goaltending situation.

Brossoit has been in the league since 2014-15 but didn’t see double-digit appearances until 2017-18 with the Edmonton Oilers. His career save percentage is .906 overall but the only truly good season on his resume was last year when he outperformed Hellebuyck as the backup. Winnipeg’s defence struggled mightily to control possession this season but there simply wasn’t anything remarkable about Brossoit’s campaign. But he’s still young and has plenty of time to be a respectable goalie in the league.

What This Means for the Future

Brossoit needs a good 2020-21 if he wants to avoid becoming a permanent third goaltending option for a team. Finding a way to recapture some of what made him productive in his first year with Winnipeg is critical. He has a decent size at 6’3″, 204-pounds with ok movements but it is hard to project what he can do moving forward. He simply doesn’t have enough of a track record with only 68 NHL games played to this point after six seasons. Almost 80 percent of that has come in the last three years with very up-and-down results. The coming year could be a defining one in his career.

Main Photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Goaltender Laurent Brossoit has a job for 2020-21.
