Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 26, featuring the Boston Garden.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Last Game Played at Boston Garden<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> clash for the final time at the old arena. It&#8217;s the final game at the vaunted arena as the B&#8217;s move into the Fleet Center, which is now TD Garden. Hall of Famers <strong><span id=\"token-68A16B673F440DE2D41B1\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/schmimi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Milt Schmidt<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, <strong><span id=\"token-A0D464A766D43DE537181\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bucykjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Bucyk<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, <strong><span id=\"token-37771536F3B8E2ADA019A\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/orrbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Orr<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span id=\"token-37771536F3B8E2ADA019A\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">, <\/span>and <strong><span id=\"token-A056200750D73339689BB\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>lower their retired numbers from the rafters.<\/p>\n<p>Orr gets the loudest cheers and the final skate in the arena. <span id=\"token-00B7CF2B1D84A9F79E9A2\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/leveino01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Normand Leveille<\/a><\/strong> appears after a cerebral hemorrhage forces him to retire 13 years earlier. Rene Rancourt sings &#8220;Auld Lang Syne&#8221; as<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bourqra01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Bourque<\/a><\/strong> and<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/oreilte01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry O&#8217;Reilly<\/a><\/strong> help Leveille onto the ice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1925:<\/strong> The New York Americans expansion team is allowed to join the league. They purchase the roster of the cash-strapped Hamilton Tigers after they dropped out of the league.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>1926: <\/b><\/strong>The NHL decides that blue lines will be measured 60 feet from each goal line, instead of 20 feet from the center of the rink. This decision widens the neutral zone and cuts down on the number of offside calls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1958:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> sign <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shacked01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eddie Shack<\/a><\/strong> to his first professional contract and assign him to Providence of the AHL. Shack was traded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/leafs\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> in November 1960 and became a cult hero with the club. He <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/2020\/07\/26\/toronto-maple-leafs-eddie-shack-passes-at-age-83\/\" target=\"_self\">passed away at age 83<\/a> in July 2020.<\/p>\n<p><b>1972: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hendepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Henderson<\/a><\/strong> breaks a tie late in the third period to help Team Canada even the Summit Series with the USSR. Canada beats the Soviets by a 4-3 score in Game 7 of the series. Henderson takes a pass from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/savarse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Serge Savard<\/a><\/strong> and he splits two defencemen to beat goaltender <strong>Vladislav Tretiak<\/strong>. Both teams are 3-3-1 going into the deciding Game 8.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> The Rangers sign Hall of Famer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laflegu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Lafleur<\/a><\/strong> less than three weeks after his induction. He and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a> <\/strong>are the only players to return to the league after gaining entry to the Hall. Lafleur gets 18 goals and 27 assists for 45 points in 67 games.
