We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 23, featuring Manon Rheaume.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Manon Rheaume Plays for Tampa<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong> The Beauport, Quebec native is the first woman to in any major North American sports league. She suits up for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/lightning\/\" target=\"_self\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> in an exhibition game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>. She makes seven saves on nine shots in a 2-2 tie with the Blues.<\/p>\n<p>Her appearance draws plenty of attention for the expansion club, but it&#8217;s not her only game with Tampa. She plays one period of a 1993 exhibition game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a> and plays 24 men&#8217;s minor league games. Rheaume helps Canada win the silver medal in women&#8217;s hockey at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and gold at the 1992 and 1994 IIHF Women&#8217;s World Championship.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1929:<\/strong> The Montreal Maroons name <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/munrodu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dunc Munro<\/a> <\/strong>as their new head coach. He replaces<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gerared01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eddie Gerard<\/a> <\/strong>behind the bench and leads the Maroons to the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1979:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\"> Edmonton Oilers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/jets\/\" target=\"_self\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> play their first exhibition game as a part of the NHL. Both teams are part of four clubs absorbed into the league after the WHA merges with the NHL. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_self\">Hartford Whalers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_self\">Quebec Nordiques<\/a> also join the NHL as part of the merger. Winnipeg defeats Edmonton, 4-2, in a game where <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a><\/strong> also made his NHL debut.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1991:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bossymi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Bossy<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/potvide01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denis Potvin<\/a><\/strong> headline the Hockey Hall of Fame class of 1991. The duo were the cornerstones of the Islanders four straight Stanley Cups in the 1980s. Forwards <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithcl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clint Smith<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pulfobo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bob Pulford<\/a><\/strong> enter the Hall as well as coach <strong>Scotty Bowman.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2011: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/modanmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Modano<\/a><\/strong> signs a one-day contract with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/stars\/\" target=\"_self\">Dallas Stars<\/a> and then retires. The American finishes with most goals (561) and points (1,374) of any of his countrymen. He spends 20 years with the Minnesota North Stars\/Dallas Stars franchise before finishing up with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/redwings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. Modano enters the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/kings\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a> complete a two-game sweep of the NHL China Games with a 4-3 victory over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canucks\/\" target=\"_self\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a>.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brodzjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonny Brodzinski<\/a><\/strong> scores the game-winning goal in front of 12,759 fans at Wukesong Arena in Beijing.
