He scored a career-best 17 goals and 32 points in 68 games. That was a vast improvement over 2018-19 when he scored eight goals and 13 points in 44 games. The former sixth-round pick improved in almost every aspect of his game and finished the regular season sixth on the team in scoring despite just averaging just 13:42 minutes per game. Mangiapane was also a key part of Calgary’s playoff effort with two goals and five points in the team’s 10 games before being eliminated.

Mangiapane remained steady on possession stats with a 53.1 percent Corsi For this season. He posted a 54.6 Corsi For in 2018-19 so he was still quite good at helping control the puck despite a slight dip. The big improvements came in both shot attempts and how often the team shot with him on the ice. Mangiapane’s shots per game improved from 1.48 to 1.6. His Corsi For Relative jumped from 0.0 to 3.6, a huge spike in the number of shot attempts when he was actively skating. Those improvements will make him a bigger part of the offence when play begins next season.

What This Means for the Future

This contract is great for Mangiapane. He should have increased opportunities to play alongside Calgary’s other young star in Matthew Tkachuk. The team does not have the deepest pool of young talent, but Mangiapane and Tkachuk are certainly part of the Flames’ next core of players.

Calgary is far from done addressing its offseason needs. The team still has a handful of defenders to potentially re-sign unless it wants to completely rebuild part of the blue line for 2020-21. Productive veterans like Erik Gustafsson or T.J. Brodie were free agents and will not return. Gustafsson signed with the Philadelphia Flyers, and Brodie signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. They also need to decide who will play in the net other than David Rittich.
