Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 21, featuring<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/morenho01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Howie Morenz<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Canadiens Great Howie Morenz Born<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1902:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> great is born in Mitchell, Ontario. He is one of the most electrifying players of the early NHL. Morenz is known as the &#8220;Stratford Streak: and signs with the team for the 1923-24 season. He scores 28 goals in 30 games in his second season and 40 in 44 games in 1929-30.<\/p>\n<p>His blazing speed is useful in an era where forward passing is not legal. End-to-end rushes are common and Morenz is a master of that. He plays also with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Black Hawks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> before returning to the Habs in 1936-37. Morenz tragically dies from a blood clot as the result of a broken leg in January 1937.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1967:<\/strong> Retired goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/plantja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacques Plante<\/a><\/strong> returns to play in an exhibition game with the California Seals against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/kings\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>. Plante doesn&#8217;t play a regular season game for the club, but returns with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> for the 1968-69 season. He and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hallgl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glenn Hall<\/a><\/strong> help the expansion club give up the fewest goals. The duo win the Vezina Trophy and steer the Blues to the Stanley Cup Final. Salo spends nine seasons with the Canucks and gains fame for his powerful slap shot.
