Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 16, featuring the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Alex Ovechkin Born in Moscow<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1985:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Capitals<\/a> winger is born on this date in Moscow. He is the top pick of the 2004 NHL Draft and wins the Calder Trophy in his first season in 2005-06. Ovechkin is the first player to score 60 goals since 1995-96 when he did in 2007-08 with 65.<\/p>\n<p>He is the first Russian to score 500 and 600 goals in the league. The &#8220;Great Eight&#8221; wins the Rocket Richard Trophy in 2017-18 and wins the Stanley Cup in that same season. He becomes the highest-scoring Russian in February 2019 when he passes <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fedorse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergei Fedorov<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1970:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_self\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a> play their first exhibition game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> in Peterborough, Ontario. Buffalo and New York play to a 4-4 tie after <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/i\/inglibi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Billy Inglis<\/a><\/strong> scored for the Sabres. He would never score in a regular season game for Buffalo. Inglis gets one assist in 14 games with the Sabres.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1971: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laflegu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Lafleur<\/a><\/strong> plays his first exhibition game with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>. The top pick of the 1971 NHL Draft hands out three assists in a 7-4 victory over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\">Boston Bruins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1979:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_self\">Atlanta Flames<\/a> sign 1972 Summit Series hero <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hendepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Henderson<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. Henderson scores seven goals and 13 points in 30 games in his final NHL season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1986:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> sign <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/woodra01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Randy Wood<\/a><\/strong> out of Yale University. He scores over 20 goals for the Islanders three times and twice with the Sabres.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1991:<\/strong> Montreal trades forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cassean01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Cassels<\/a><\/strong> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_self\">Hartford Whalers<\/a> for a second-round pick. The top pick of the 2017 NHL Draft wins the Calder Trophy in his first season with the Maple Leafs.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mighty Ducks of Anaheim<\/a> acquire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngsc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Young<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_self\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a>.
