Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 15, featuring the 1987 Canada Cup.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Canada Beats USSR in 1987 Canada Cup<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1987:<\/strong> Canada beats the Soviet Union, 6-5, in Game 3 in one of the best series ever played. The USSR jumped out to a three-goal lead, but Canada took a 5-4 lead. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/semakal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander Semak<\/a><\/strong> ties the game at 12:21 of the third period for the Soviets.<\/p>\n<p>A third overtime is likely, but <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a><\/strong> scores off a pass from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a><\/strong> with 1:26 left in regulation for the win. Gretzky gets tournament MVP honours after 18 assists and 21 points in nine games. Lemieux is the beneficiary of most of these assists, including game-winners in Games 2 and 3.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1960:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> great <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maurice Richard<\/a><\/strong> retires after 18 seasons with the Habs. He retires after winning eight Stanley Cups and finishes as the NHL&#8217;s all-time leader with 544 goals, including 50 in 50 games during the 1944\u201345 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sittlda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darryl Sittler<\/a><\/strong> scores 11:33 of overtime to give Team Canada the inaugural Canada Cup with a 5-4 win over Czechoslovakia in Game 2. Czechoslovakia rallies twice and takes a 4-3 lead, but <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/barbebi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Barber<\/a><\/strong> ties the game with 2:12 left in regulation. Sittler&#8217;s goal brings the Montreal Forum fans to their feet in the first best-on-best tournament.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1981: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mahovfr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank Mahovlich<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stanlal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allan Stanley<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bucykjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Bucyk<\/a><\/strong>, and former NHL referee <strong>John Ashley<\/strong> are the newest members of the Hockey Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1987:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_self\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> trade <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=adamsgr02,adamsgr01&amp;search=Greg+Adams&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greg Adams<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcleaki01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirk McLean<\/a><\/strong> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_self\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a>. Naslund is second behind <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smylst01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stan Smyl<\/a><\/strong> for longest tenure for a Canucks captain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004:<\/strong> Commissioner <strong>Gary Bettman<\/strong> announces the lockout of its players and cessation of operations by the NHL head office. The entire season would be lost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_self\"> Boston Bruins<\/a> beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_self\">Calgary Flames<\/a>, 4-3, in a shootout in the first game of the NHL China Games in Shenzhen. <strong>Jake DeBrusk<\/strong> gets the winner in the fourth round of the shootout in the first of two games.
