We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 14th, featuring the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>U.S. Wins World Cup of Hockey<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1996:<\/strong> The Americans rally with four third-period goals to beat Canada, 5-2, in Game 3 of the tournament. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/footead01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Foote<\/a><\/strong> gives the Canadians a 2-1 lead, but <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brett Hull<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/amontto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Amonte<\/a><\/strong> score 43 seconds apart.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hatchde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derian Hatcher<\/a><\/strong> and<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/deadmad01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Deadmarsh<\/a><\/strong> seal the deal for Team USA.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the first major tournament win for the United States since the 1980 Winter Olympics. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richtmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Richter<\/a><\/strong> is named the tournament&#8217;s MVP. The event served as a replacement for the old Canada Cup.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1972:<\/strong> The expansion <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Islanders<\/a> open up their first training camp in Peterborough, Ontario. New York would set futility records with the fewest wins (12) and points (30) in a season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> swap Hall of Famers out at the head coach position. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francem01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emile Francis<\/a><\/strong> becomes the team&#8217;s 10th bench boss replacing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/boivile01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leo Boivin<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1979:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_self\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> sign defenceman<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/huddych01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie Huddy<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. He is a member of\u00a0 three Stanley Cup-winners in his time with the club.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000:<\/strong> Twin brothers <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sedinhe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henrik Sedin<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sedinda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Sedin<\/a><\/strong> make their debut for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_self\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a>. The pair play in the Canucks&#8217; 5-3 win over MoDo at the NHL Challenge in Stockholm. Daniel gets a goal and two assists on a line centred by Henrik against their old team. Vancouver wins the tournament with a 2-1 overtime win over Djurgarden with Daniel getting the game-winner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/doansh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shane Doan<\/a><\/strong> scores the game-winning goal to help Canada beat Finland, 3-2, in the World Cup of Hockey. Doan helps Canada score on the first shot of each period to take the title. He beats Finland goalie <span id=\"token-66C06EEEB4E28CD7FC18A\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kiprumi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miikka Kiprusoff<\/a><\/strong> 34 seconds into the third to get the victory. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lecavvi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vincent Lecavalier<\/a><\/strong> has seven points in the tournament and is named MVP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2018:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> captain <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/z\/zettehe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henrik Zetterberg<\/a><\/strong> has to step away from hockey due to a back condition. The Swede was team captain since 2012-13 and won the Conn Smythe in 2008. He is fifth in team history in goals (337), assists (623) and points (960), and sixth in games played (1,082).
