Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 13th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/karlser01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Erik Karlsson<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Erik Karlsson Traded to Sharks<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2018:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_self\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> acquire the Norris Trophy-winner from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_self\">Ottawa Senators<\/a>. Ottawa receives forwards <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tiernch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Tierney<\/a>, <span id=\"token-F9C0F4119C5D2C0BB5EAC\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/balceru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rudolfs Balcers<\/a><\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/demeldy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dylan DeMelo<\/a>,<\/strong> prospect <strong><span id=\"token-1BC9F7ACC4CDF84F180AC\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Josh Norris<\/span><\/strong> and a score of draft picks. The Senators deal the Swede after he declines to sign a contract extension.<\/p>\n<p>Karlsson gets three goals and 45 points in 53 games after missing 29 games due to injury. The Sharks make a decent run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, however, are ousted in the Western Conference Final by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/category\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1926:<\/strong> Hall of Famer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francem01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emile Francis<\/a><\/strong> is born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. Francis plays for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Rangers<\/a> as well as the minor leagues. He becomes the coach of the Rangers&#8217; junior team in Guelph and becomes the assistant general manager. Francis is promoted to general manager in 1964 and coach in 1965. He helps the Blueshirts become one of the better teams in the league. The Rangers fire Francis in 1976, but he quickly lands a job with the St. Louis Blues. He ends his career with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_self\">Hartford Whalers<\/a> in 1993 after being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1982.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> Goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/plantja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacques Plante<\/a><\/strong> headlines this year&#8217;s Hall of Fame class. The inventor of the goalie mask joins <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bathgan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andy Bathgate<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>Marcel Provonost<\/strong> as players in the year&#8217;s class. Sam Pollock, J.P. Bickell, and William Thayer Tutt also enter as builders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1981:<\/strong> The Soviet Union takes the second Canada Cup tournament with an 8-1 rout of Team Canada. They break the game open with a five-goal third period to seal the victory. Goalie <strong>Vladislav Tretiak<\/strong> gets tournament most valuable player honours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bossymi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Bossy<\/a><\/strong> scores 12:29 into overtime as Canada avenges their 1981 loss to the USSR with a 3-2 win. Canada&#8217;s victory sets up a best-of-three final series with Sweden.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1987: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a><\/strong> gets the game-winner 10:07 into the second overtime as Canada beats the Soviet Union 6-5 in one of the greatest hockey games of all-time. Canada can&#8217;t hold leads and <strong>V<\/strong><span id=\"token-5DEA531AC41CEEB635F9A\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong>aleri Kamensky<\/strong> ties the game with 1:04 left in regulation.
