Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 9th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/langwro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rod Langway<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Capitals Trade for Rod Langway<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1982:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> get the future Norris Trophy-winner from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_self\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>. Langway is one of the first moves new general manager <strong>David Poile<\/strong> makes to turn around the franchise. Washington also gets <strong><span id=\"token-BB1FA3651E327EAD84E8A\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/engblbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Engblom<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-B6A93ADE9350625161DBE\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jarvido01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Jarvis<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and <span id=\"token-4C30113AFCFF632BDEE93\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laughcr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Laughlin<\/a><\/strong>. Montreal picks up <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/waltery01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Walter<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenri01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick Green<\/a><\/strong> in the deal.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Capitals start a streak of 14 consecutive playoff appearances and Langway wins two Norris Trophies. He makes the Hall of Fame in 2002, who was a key part of 1979 Stanley Cup winners. The Capitals also name <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrate01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Murray<\/a><\/strong> as an assistant coach to brother <strong>Bryan Murray<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1960: <span id=\"token-4599B13667E367DE61A88\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">George Boucher<\/span>, <span id=\"token-F32F5230FA9141D33FC84\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/manthsy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sylvio Mantha<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>and <span id=\"token-132145617B591DEED2694\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/walkeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Walker<\/a><\/strong> enter Hall of Fame as players. <strong>Charles Adams<\/strong> and<strong> Frank Selke<\/strong> make it in via the Builder&#8217;s category. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1997: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a><\/strong> highlights this year&#8217;s Hall of Fame class. Lemieux had his three-year waiting period waived much like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/orrbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Orr<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/belivje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean Beliveau<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a><\/strong>. &#8220;Super Mario&#8221; would return to the NHL after induction just like Howe and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laflegu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Lafleur<\/a><\/strong> did. <strong>Bryan<\/strong> <strong>Trottier<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sathegl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glen Sather<\/a><\/strong> were also inducted that year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2013:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> goalie <strong><span id=\"token-C37DD4DE2960D8A1CD68D\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kiprumi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miikka Kiprusoff<\/a><\/span><\/strong> retires from the NHL after 12 seasons. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_self\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> originally drafted him in the fifth round, 116th overall of the 1995 NHL Draft. His career takes off after he&#8217;s dealt to Calgary in November 2003. He leads the Flames to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a>. <span id=\"token-C37DD4DE2960D8A1CD68D\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Kiprusoff wins both the Vezina and Jennings Trophies in 2005-06 and and wins at least 35 games in seven consecutive seasons from 2005-06 through 2011-12. &#8220;Kipper&#8221; finishes with a record of 319-213-71.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong> Three-time Norris Trophy-winner <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pilotpi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pierre Pilote<\/a><\/strong> dies at the age of 85. The Hockey Hall of Famer played for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> and wins the Norris from 1963-65. He is inducted into the Hall of Famer in 1975 and Chicago retires his No. 3 sweater in 2008.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018:<\/strong> Montreal trades team captain <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pacioma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Pacioretty<\/a><\/strong> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/knights\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vegas Golden Knights.<\/a> The Habs get <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatarto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tomas Tatar<\/a><\/strong>, prospect <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/suzukni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Suzuki<\/a><\/strong> and a second-round pick in 2019.
