We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 8th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Gordie Howe Retires for First Time<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1971:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> great retires after 25 seasons with the team. The 43-year-old retires with the most games, goals, assists and points. However, he&#8217;s coming off his worst offensive season with 23 goals and 52 points. The Hockey Hall of Fame waives the three-year waiting period to induct him.<\/p>\n<p>However, he returns to the ice two years later with the Houston Aeros of the WHA. He plays with his sons <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howema02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Howe<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marty Howe<\/a><\/strong> for six seasons. The trio move to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_self\">New England Whalers<\/a> for the last two seasons in the WHA before the two leagues merge. He plays all 80 games in 1979-80, finishing with 41 points (15 goals, 26 assists), before retiring for good shortly after his 52nd birthday.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1972:<\/strong> The Soviet Union beats Canada, 5-3, in Game 4 of the Summit Series in Vancouver. <strong>Boris Mikhailov<\/strong> scores two first-period power-play goals as the USSR takes a 2-1-1 lead into the final four games in Russia. The teams take a two-week break before completing the series.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1980:<\/strong> Goalies <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/worslgu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gump Worsley<\/a><\/strong> and <span id=\"token-F764CB692034EFCA7B8B8\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lumleha01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harry Lumley<\/a><\/strong> highlight this year&#8217;s Hockey Hall of Fame class. <strong><span id=\"token-D0785DAAF698D4F19F786\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/patrily01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lynn Patrick<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>and longtime American Hockey League president Jack Butterfield also gain entry to the Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1982: <span id=\"token-48B58B90F86B8348C6F87\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cournyv01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yvan Cournoyer<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-0FD00228294A603FB828D\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilbero01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rod Gilbert<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-46340AD62D2AEFA005A82\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/u\/ullmano01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Norm Ullman<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span id=\"token-1E6C352301C9E337EB18F\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francem01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emile Francis<\/a><\/span><\/strong> are inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Cournoyer won 10 Stanley Cups with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> from 1963-1979. Gilbert is the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> New York Rangers<\/a>&#8216; all-time leader in goals (406) and points (1,021). Francis was Gilbert&#8217;s coach for most of his tenure with the Rangers and helped rebuild them in the 1960s. He served as the team&#8217;s head coach through the next decade. Ullman split time between the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> and the Red Wings. He was the fifth player to reach 1,000 points in league history with 490 goals in 1,410 games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1986:<\/strong> The Rangers trade forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/maclebr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian MacLellan<\/a><\/strong> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota North Stars<\/a>. New York would get a future draft choice from Minnesota. He scored 32 goals with the North Stars, but was traded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> in the 1988-89 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mighty Ducks of Anaheim<\/a> name<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rucchst01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Rucchin<\/a><\/strong> as their fifth captain in team history.
