We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 6th, featuring the 1972 Summit Series.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Soviets Rally to Tie Game 3 of Summit Series<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1972:<\/strong> Canada and USSR play to a 4-4 tie in Game 3 of the Summit Series at Winnipeg Arena. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Hull<\/a><\/strong> is in attendance with over 10,000 fans because he wasn&#8217;t allowed to play for Canada. Hull&#8217;s contract with the WHA prevented him from representing his country.<\/p>\n<p>Canada scores first again thanks to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/parisjp01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.P. Parise<\/a><\/strong>, but Russia overcomes a 4-2 deficit thanks to goals by <strong>Yuri Lebedev<\/strong> and <strong>Alexander Budonov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Esposito<\/a> <\/strong>makes a key save on <strong>Alexander Maltsev<\/strong> with 15 seconds left to salvage the tie.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1967:<\/strong> The expansion <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a> practice for the first time in Guelph, Ontario. Los Angeles holds their first two camps in Guelph before moving to Victoria, British Columbia. The Kings would start holding camps in Southern California in 1974.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> acquire high-scoring forward<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilmodo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Gilmour<\/a> <\/strong>from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>. <strong>Michael Bullard, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/coxecr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Coxe<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong>Tim Corkery<\/strong> come over to the the Blues. The Flames also get <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/huntema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Hunter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bozekst01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Bozek<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/darkmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Dark<\/a><\/strong>. Gilmour and Hunter play a vital role in Calgary winning their only Stanley Cup in 1989. The Flames would deal Gilmour to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1992.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1990:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_self\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> officially reveal their name as a tribute to the many sharks that live in the Pacific Ocean. There are seven types of sharks that live in the waters of the Bay Area. The team would reveal the colours, logo and uniform designs at a later date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1991:<\/strong> San Jose practices for the first time in team history, but the team makes news for other reasons. The Sharks send <strong><span id=\"token-A3FC5BDADB36B1BCF21AA\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Kerry Toporowski<\/span><\/strong> and a draft pick to the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>. San Jose gets defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wilsodo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Wilson<\/a><\/strong>, who is soon named team captain. He retires with the team in 1993 and becomes general manager in 2003.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> Goaltender <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hextaro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Hextall<\/a><\/strong> retires after a 13-year career in the league. He played with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Quebec Nordiques<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a>.
