There&#8217;s plenty of work to do with the league having a short off-season. Today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/rumours\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NHL rumours<\/a> focus on the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arizona Coyotes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/knights\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vegas Golden Knights.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All NHL rumours are taken from the original source and subject to change.<\/p>\n<h2>NHL Rumours<\/h2>\n<h3>Arizona Coyotes<\/h3>\n<p><em>Rumour:NBC analyst Pierre McGuire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nhl\/article\/broadcaster-pierre-mcguire-interviewed-coyotes-gm-position\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was interviewed <\/a>for the vacant general manager job according to Sportsnet&#8217;s Chris Johnston. He added that <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> assistant general manager Jason Karmanos is also a candidate.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ArizonaCoyotes?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@ArizonaCoyotes<\/a> continue their search for a general manager, it seems broadcaster Pierre McGuire is in the mix for the role.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sEbGBRmhMX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/sEbGBRmhMX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sportsnet\/status\/1302455385899626496?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 6, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>Analysis:<\/em> McGuire was a coach\/general manager of the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Hartford Whalers i<\/a>n early 90s. However, that was a massive flop. The last assistant coaching job he held was with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_self\">Ottawa Senators<\/a>. There&#8217;s a large contingent of hockey fans that want McGuire to get the job so he can be off television broadcasts.<\/p>\n<p>McGuire would bring name value to a franchise looking for recognition in the hockey world. He has ties to Hall of Famer Scotty Bowman and the well-respected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/holmgpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Holmgren<\/a>. McGuire&#8217;s hiring would mean less of a learning curve than a first-time general manager.<\/p>\n<p>Karmanos is the son of former <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> owner Peter Karmanos and has been with the Penguins since 2014. He has helped the franchise use more analytics and been helpful to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rutheji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Rutherford<\/a>. He also oversees Pittsburgh&#8217;s scouting department and was part of the Hurricanes for many seasons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sullist01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Steve Sullivan<\/strong><\/a> is serving as interim general manager after John Chayka quit. Sullivan is still in the running for the job and is taking trade calls. Goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kuempda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darcy Kuemper<\/a> <\/strong>got the attention of many teams.<\/p>\n<h3>Washington Capitals<\/h3>\n<p><em>Rumour: Elliotte Friedman reports that the Capitals are looking at <strong>Mike Babcock<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gallage01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gerard Gallant<\/a><\/strong> for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nhl\/article\/mike-babcock-gerard-gallant-interview-capitals-head-coach-role\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vacant head coach position<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laviope01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter Laviolette<\/a> is also in the mix for that coveted job.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mike Babcock and Gerard Gallant interviewed for the vacant Capitals head coaching position. \ud83d\udc40<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ASMtDO79c6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/ASMtDO79c6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sportsnet\/status\/1302439249875214338?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 6, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>Analysis:<\/em> All three coaches are successful NHL bench bosses that will inherit a good team. Babcock has experience managing star players from his stints with the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Detroit Red Wings<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> and Team Canada. He&#8217;ll have plenty of firepower in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/backsni02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicklas Backstrom<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kuzneev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evgeny Kuznetsov<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Gallant led the Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final in their first season. He&#8217;s also coached the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida Panthers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blue-jackets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a>. Gallant played a big hand in the Knights&#8217; early success in the league. He is a mix of grit and skill that can motivate his players.<\/p>\n<p>Laviolette is good at maximizing a team&#8217;s offensive potential. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/predators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nashville Predators<\/a> reached the Final in his first season in 2016. However, defence and goaltending caused his firing in the 2019-20 season. Washington&#8217;s boasts plenty of offence and Laviolette can unlock it.<\/p>\n<p>Capitals&#8217; management has been cheap at times when it comes to paying coaches. However, there three prime candidates are proving that Ted Leonsis might be opening up his wallet. There are questions about goaltending and defence, but there&#8217;s a good team to work with.<\/p>\n<h3>Vegas Golden Knights<\/h3>\n<p><em>Rumour: The Athletic&#8217;s Eric Stephens said that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fleurma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc-Andre Fleury<\/a><\/strong> may be done in Vegas. Fleury commands $7 million per season until the end of the 2021-22 season. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capfriendly.com\/buyout-calculator\/marc-andre-fleury1#results\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buying out his contract<\/a> would save over $4.4 million and $3.9 million in the next seasons. However, the last two seasons would have over $2 million of dead cap space.<\/p>\n<p>Teams might like a veteran goalie in net and it could be like a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/oreilry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan O&#8217;Reilly<\/a><\/strong> situation in going to a contender. Fleury has won all three of his post-season starts this campaign and won 27 games this season.
