Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 5th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/malkiev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evgeni Malkin<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/malkiev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evgeni Malkin<\/a> Signs First Pro Contract<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2006:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/hockey\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> announce the signing of the second pick of the 2004 NHL Draft. Malkin scores 33 goals and 85 points as he wins the Calder Trophy. The Russian becomes a vital part of the Penguins revival with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sidney Crosby<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Malkin wins the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rossar01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Art Ross<\/a> Trophy for the league&#8217;s top scorer in the 2008-09 season. He takes the Conn Smythe Trophy for post-season MVP in the same season. Pittsburgh wins three Stanley Cups with the playmaker.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1959:<\/strong> The Hockey Hall of Fame holds its first induction ceremony at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. Members have been inducted since 1945 after the Hall was established two years earlier. Previous inductees show up at the ceremony and 31 of the 34 attend the event. New members include <strong><span id=\"token-D2724A11CA472BA9DB0B6\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dennecy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cy Denneny<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-48426F5AA000AA998B882\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/thompti01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tiny Thompson<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>and <strong><span id=\"token-93AEDA7342D99E5397786\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/adamsja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Adams<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, who is inducted as a player. Adams spends 36 seasons as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> coach and general manager. He&#8217;s the only player to win the Stanley Cup as a player, coach and general manager.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> Team Canada beats Team USA, 4-2, in the second round robin game of the Canada Cup. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mahovpe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pete Mahovlich<\/a><\/strong> netted early power-play goals to give the Canadians a 2-0 lead.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Hull<\/a><\/strong> gives Team Canada a three-goal lead before <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/ahernfr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fred Ahern<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jensest01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Jensen<\/a><\/strong> scored for Team USA. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sittlda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darryl Sittler<\/a><\/strong> bags an empty-netter to make it 4-2 for Canada.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> trade <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/charazd01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zdeno Chara<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/muckabi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Muckalt<\/a><\/strong> and the second overall pick (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/spezzja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Spezza<\/a><\/strong>) to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ottawa Senators<\/a>. However, the deal is another one of Milbury&#8217;s classic mistakes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> sign <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/messima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Messier<\/a><\/strong> to a one-year contract. Messier plays one final seasons with the Blueshirts on 1,844 points. He passes <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a><\/strong> for second on the all-time points list in his 25th and final NHL season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2005:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phoenix Coyotes<\/a> sign goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/essenbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bob Essensa<\/a><\/strong> to a free agent contract. It&#8217;s the second stint with the Winnipeg Jets\/Phoenix Coyotes franchise.
