We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 4th, featuring Clarence Campbell.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Clarence Campbell Becomes NHL President<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1946:<\/strong> Clarence Campbell takes over for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/duttore01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red Dutton<\/a>, who replaced Frank Calder after his death. Campbell serves in the post of league president for the next 31 years. He sees the league grow from six teams to 18 by the end of his tenure.<\/p>\n<p>Campbell retires on June 22, 1977 and makes the Hall of Fame 11 years before. He adds the All-Star Game and beats back the challenge of the WHA. The schedule also increases from 50 games at the the start of his reign up to 80 by the time he steps down.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1972:<\/strong> Canada takes Game Two of the 1971 Summit Series, 4-1, over the Soviet Union. Team Canada coach Harry Sinden goes with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Esposito<\/a> in goal to replace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/drydeke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Dryden<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a> scores to give Canada a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes. Goals from <strong><span id=\"token-A419281BA0B08C167A8BF\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cournyv01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yvan Cournoyer<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-8CD3FC89CD27A59810596\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Peter Mahovlich<\/span><\/strong> and <span id=\"token-F2F1B62F35AE996B235A7\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mahovfr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank Mahovlich<\/a><\/strong> in the third give the Canadians the win at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1979: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/geoffbe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bernie Geoffrion<\/a><\/strong> becomes the new head coach of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>. &#8220;Boom Boom&#8221; has been dreaming of this moment since he was a player for the Habs in the 1950s and 60s. However, he is forced to step down after only 30 games due to health issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1990:<\/strong> Montreal trades <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiecl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Claude Lemieux<\/a><\/strong> to the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> New Jersey Devils<\/a> for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/turgesy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sylvain Turgeon<\/a><\/strong>. Lemieux wins three more Stanley Cups in his career and take the Conn Smythe with the Devils in 1995.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> acquire goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fuhrgr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grant Fuhr<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> for a third-round draft pick. Fuhr splits time between the big club and the Saint John Flames of the AHL. It&#8217;s his final season in hockey before he calls it a career.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richtmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Richter<\/a><\/strong> retires after 14 seasons with the Blueshirts. He is forced to call it a career after suffering two concussions in a span of eight months. Richter retires as the team&#8217;s leader in wins with 301. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lundqhe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henrik Lundqvist<\/a><\/strong> would eventually pass him for that honour. Richter backstops the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup in 54 years in 1994.
