Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 3rd, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stevesc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Stevens<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Scott Stevens Awarded to Devils<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1991:<\/strong> An arbitrator awards the defenceman to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> after the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> sign <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shanabr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brendan Shanahan<\/a><\/strong>. New Jersey got Stevens as compensation per terms of the collective bargaining agreement. The Devils ask for Stevens while the Blues offer<strong> <span id=\"token-A501256570FB670465481\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brindro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rod Brind&#8217;Amour<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-09047EC8839E28F653D86\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/josepcu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Curtis Joseph<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and two draft picks.<\/p>\n<p>St. Louis gave up five first-round picks to sign Stevens from the Washington Capitals the year before. New Jersey turns the corner with the rugged defender in the lineup and they win the Stanley Cup in 1995, 2000 and 2003. Stevens wins the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2000.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1966:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> sign defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/orrbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Orr<\/a><\/strong> to his first professional contract. Orr inks a two-year deal worth $70,000 and a season ans a signing bonus. The contract is signed after months of negotiations between Boston and Orr&#8217;s agent, Alan Eagleson. Orr turns out to be worth every penny as he wins the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year. He adds eight straight Norris Trophies and Stanley Cups in 1970 and 1972.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1987:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> make a blockbuster off-season trade. Toronto acquires <strong><span id=\"token-A77A44EE4BCC169676E9E\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/olczyed01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ed Olczyk<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>and <span id=\"token-60748D06A749C31A08ABD\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/secoral01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Secord<\/a><\/strong> while Chicago gets <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vaiveri01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick Vaive<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/thomast01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Thomas<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcgilbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bob McGill<\/a>. Vaive nets 43 goals in the following season for Chicago while Thomas hits the 40-goal mark in his third season. <span id=\"token-A77A44EE4BCC169676E9E\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Olczyk<\/span> nets 112 goals in three seasons with the Leafs, but Secord never regains his 54-goal form free 1982-83. Secord scores 15 goals in 1987-88 and is traded in the middle of the next season.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1991:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> New York Rangers<\/a> sign restricted free agent forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gravead01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Graves<\/a><\/strong>. He scores seven goals for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> in 1990-91, but finds his scoring touch with the Blueshirts. He scores 26 goals in his first season on Broadway. Graves sets a team-record for goals with 52 in the 1993-94 seasons. He is a key part of the Rangers winning their first Stanley Cup since 1940.<\/p>\n<p>2003: Boston signs free agent goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/potvife01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Felix Potvin<\/a> <\/strong>to a contract. He previously played parts of the last three seasons with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>.
