We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for September 2nd, featuring the Summit Series.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>USSR Takes Summit Series Opener<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1972:<\/strong> The Soviet Union shocks Canada, 7-3, in the opening game of the Summit Series. Many thought the Russians would not fare well against the Canadian pros. However, would overcome goals by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hendepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Henderson<\/a><\/strong> with a pair of goals by <strong>Valeri Kharlamov<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/clarkbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Clarke<\/a><\/strong> scores to make it 4-3, but the Soviets pull away with three consecutive goals. Canada would eventually triumph in eight games by winning five games.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1943:<\/strong> Coach and general manager <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sathegl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glen Sather<\/a><\/strong> is born in High River, Alberta. He plays 11 seasons between the NHL and WHA, but makes a name as a coach and executive. Sather builds the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> teams that win five Stanley Cups from 1984-90. He enters the Hall of Fame in 1997, but joins as <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> general manager in 2000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1965:<\/strong> Ruben Pastor files an application for a franchise based in Buffalo, N.Y. to be admitted into the NHL. He is one of three brothers that own the Buffalo Bisons franchise of the AHL. The team gains entry into the league as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a> in 1970.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1967:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brodatu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Turk Broda<\/a><\/strong> headlines this year&#8217;s Hall of Fame class. <strong><span id=\"token-1F0F326D2D663BCBBB797\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/colvine01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Neil Colville<\/a><\/span>, <\/strong><span id=\"token-8AF88C193F4C909DA198D\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/oliveha01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harry Oliver<\/a><\/strong><\/span> and referee Red Storey are also inducted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> The first Canada Cup begins as the hosts rout Finland, 11-2, in Ottawa. It&#8217;s the first tournament that allows pros to represent their respective countries. The tournament also marks the international return for Team Canada after a four-year boycott of the IIHF.<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Hull<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/orrbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Orr<\/a><\/strong> help Canada down the Finns. Hull wasn&#8217;t allowed to participate in the Summit Series because he was in the WHA and Orr was nursing a knee injury.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/wild\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Wild<\/a> name <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/risebdo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Risebrough<\/a><\/strong> as the team&#8217;s first general manager. He stays with the Wild until April 2009.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mulleki01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirk Muller<\/a><\/strong> announces his retirement after 19 seasons in the league. The Kingston, Ontario native played for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a>, Leafs, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida Panthers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars<\/a>.
