We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 31st featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/belivje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean Beliveau<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Jean Beliveau is Born<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1931:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> great is born in Trois Rivieres, Quebec. Beliveau rebuffs the Canadiens several times to stay with the Quebec Aces. Montreal simply buys the amateur Quebec Senior Hockey League in 1953. The Habs make it a professional league and get Beliveau&#8217;s rights.<\/p>\n<p>He is a member of 17 Stanley Cup winners as a player and executive. Beliveau finishes with 1,219 points (507 goals, 712 assists) in 1,125 NHL games and is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972 after the Hall waives its mandatory three-year waiting period. He passes away at age 83 on December 2, 2014.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1973:<\/strong> Hall of Fame defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/niedesc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Niedermayer<\/a><\/strong> is born in Edmonton. He is the third pick of the 1991 NHL Draft and wins four Stanley Cups. Niedermayer wins three titles with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> and one with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anaheim Ducks.<\/a> He also wins the IIHF World Championship, World Junior Championship, Olympic gold and a Memorial Cup. Niedermayer finishes his career with 740 points (172 goals, 568 assists) in 1,263 NHL games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota North Stars<\/a> trade <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bellobr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Bellows<\/a><\/strong> to Montreal. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/courtru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russ Courtnall<\/a><\/strong> comes to the Twin Cities in return.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> pull off a blockbuster trade. New York gets <span id=\"token-400FB2E68ACD42B4AEB9E\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/robitlu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luc Robitaille<\/a><\/strong> and <\/span><span id=\"token-69CA7233103BE74AA5A9B\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/samueul01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ulf Samuelsson<\/a><\/strong> while Pittsburgh receives <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nedvepe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Petr Nedved<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/z\/zubovse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergei Zubov<\/a><\/strong>. Robitaille scores 23 and 24 goals in two seasons with the Blueshirts before he&#8217;s traded back to the Los Angeles Kings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2001:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars<\/a> bring back forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/verbepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Verbeek<\/a><\/strong> after signing him to a free agent contract. Verbeek had spent the last two seasons with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. &#8220;The Little Ball of Hate&#8221; scores seven goals in his final season in the league.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2005:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> sign <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/ovechal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Ovechkin<\/a><\/strong> to a three-year, entry-level contract. Ovechkin makes an instant impact with two goals in his NHL debut. The Moscow native scores 52 goals and wins the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year. He&#8217;s the league&#8217;s top-scoring Russian of all-time and wins his the Stanley Cup in 2018.
