We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 30th featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/doansh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shane Doan<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Shane Doan Calls it a Career<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong> The Winnipeg Jets\/<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arizona Coyotes<\/a> captain retires after 21 seasons with the organization. He debuts in the final season with the original Jets, but becomes the face of Arizona hockey. The Halkirk, Alberta native is named team captain in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>He retires as the team&#8217;s all-time leader in goals (402), assists (570) and points (972). He plays in\u00a0 1,540 games, which is tied with Johnny Bucyk for 14th all-time. Arizona retires is No. 19 sweater on Feb. 24, 2019.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1979:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Montreal Canadiens<\/a> obtain goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/herrode01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denis Herron<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins.<\/a> Forwards <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hughepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Hughes<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>Robbie Holland<\/strong> come to the Penguins in return. Herron wins the Vezina Trophy in 1981 and the Jennings Trophy in 1982 for the Habs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1982:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> hire<strong> David Poile<\/strong> as general manger. Washington didn&#8217;t qualify for the post-season in eight previous seasons. However, he gets the Capitals into Stanley Cup Playoffs in 1983. Poile acquires defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/langwro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rod Langway<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>. Washington makes the post-season every year from 1983-1997 under Poile&#8217;s watch. Washington fires him after missing the playoffs in 1997, but he isn&#8217;t out of work long. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/predators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nashville Predators<\/a> hired Poile and he&#8217;s held that post ever since.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994:<\/strong> The Canadiens name <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mulleki01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirk Muller<\/a><\/strong> as team captain. Montreal replaces the recently-traded <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carbogu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Carbonneau<\/a><\/strong> with the move. The Canadiens trade Muller to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> in April 1995. Montreal names <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/keanemi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Keane<\/a><\/strong> as the next captain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2013:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anaheim Ducks<\/a> sign <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/selante01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teemu Selanne<\/a><\/strong> to a one-year contract. Selanne tells everyone his will be his final NHL season. His announcement comes in the form of a funny video made from the golf course. He also plays in one more Olympics for his native Finland. Selanne scores four goals to help the Finns win bronze at the Sochi games.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/429SNIHJE7Q\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>2016:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> sign <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mooredo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dominic Moore<\/a><\/strong> to a contract.
