We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 29th featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Lemieux<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Mario Lemieux to Miss 1994-95<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1994:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> centre said he&#8217;ll sit out the upcoming season to heal from various ailments. Lemieux takes time off due to back problems and fatigue from his radiation treatment for cancer. Doctors make it clear that his Hodgkin lymphoma in 1993 or the anemia in 1993-94 is not back.<\/p>\n<p>The time off recharges him and he wins the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rossar01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Art Ross<\/a> Trophy with 69 goals and 161 points. &#8220;Super Mario&#8221; also takes the Hart Trophy for league MVP for the 1995-96 campaign. Lemieux doesn&#8217;t permanently retire until Jan. 24, 2006.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p>1901: One of the league&#8217;s first stars, <span id=\"token-10B533B5348F4D733B699\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/joliaau01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aurele Joliat<\/a><\/strong>, is born in Ottawa. He comes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> after joining from <\/span>Saskatoon of the WCHL in September. Joliat and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/morenho01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Howie Morenz<\/strong><\/a> form one of the most potent scoring duos in the early history of the NHL. He scores 270 goals and wins three Stanley Cups with the Habs. The winger enters the Hall of Fame in 1947.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1964:<\/strong> American-born referee <strong>Bill Chadwick<\/strong> is among the five new members of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Chadwick officiates over 900 regular-season games and a then-record 42 games in the Stanley Cup Final during his 16 seasons as an NHL referee. <strong><span id=\"token-4418DEB7E4903D20C3B80\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bentldo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Bentley<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-93E636E92CE42C2BB07AC\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/durnabi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Durnan<\/a><\/span>, <\/strong><span id=\"token-D2B9AC727EF7011C25497\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong>Babe Siebert<\/strong><\/span> and <span id=\"token-864A790ACD929F7A0DEA8\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong>&#8220;Black Jack&#8221; Stewart<\/strong> all enter as players.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>1985: The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> make a deal. New Jersey trades<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/meaghri01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick Meagher<\/a><\/strong> to St. Louis for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderpe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Perry Anderson<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Los Angeles Kings<\/a> acquire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stumpjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jozef Stumpel<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mogersa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sandy Moger<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dafoeby01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Byron Dafoe<\/a><\/strong> and<strong> Dimitri Khristich<\/strong> come to the Kings in return.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> name <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/oatesad01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Oates<\/a><\/strong> as their team captain. He replaces<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hunteda02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dale Hunter<\/a><\/strong> in the role and serves for two seasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> name <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fergujo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Ferguson<\/a> Jr.<\/strong> as the team&#8217;s new general manager. Toronto makes only one post-season appearance during his tenure with the club.
