We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 28th featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/arboual01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Arbour<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Al Arbour Passes Away<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2015:<\/strong> The Hall of Fame <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> coach passes away at the age of 82. Arbour won four Stanley Cups in his playing career. He won Cups with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Black Hawks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs.<\/a> The Greater Sudbury, Ontario native finishes his playing days with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He coaches the Blues for two-plus seasons, but his career takes off with the Isles in 1973-74. Arbour guides the team to four straight championships to start the 1980s. He goes 782-577-248 in 1,607 games coached.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1932:<\/strong> Future <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> star <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bathgan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andy Bathgate<\/a><\/strong> is born in Winnipeg. He is a key part of the Blueshirts in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Bathgate wins the Hart Trophy in 1958-59 after setting team records in goals (40) and points (88). He wins a Stanley Cup in 1964 after being traded to Toronto. Bathgate retires from the NHL in 1971 after playing with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>. However, he&#8217;d play 11 games with the Vancouver Blazers of the WHA in 1974-75. He ends his career with 973 points (349 goals, 624 assists) in 1,069 games and is inducted into the Hall in 1978.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1965:<\/strong> The Hall of Fame welcomes 12 new members. <strong><span id=\"token-1584DBD32B766F835639F\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/barryma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marty Barry<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-03804F2A14C4F44DC85B9\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/benedcl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clint Benedict<\/a><\/span>, Arthur Farrell, <span id=\"token-D15319140E08C79500A9F\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hornere01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red Horner<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-8E551B7A501E601858496\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howesy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Syd Howe<\/a><\/span>, Jack Marshall, <span id=\"token-C5BF57AD0CE84AFFA8789\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mosiebi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Mosienko<\/a><\/span>, Blair Russel, Ernie Russell<\/strong> and <strong>Fred Scanlan<\/strong> make it as players. Broadcaster <strong>Foster Hewitt<\/strong> and <strong>Tom Lockhart<\/strong> enter as builders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1975:<\/strong> Former Blackawks <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hallgl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glenn Hall<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pilotpi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pierre Pilote<\/a><\/strong> headline this year&#8217;s Hall of Fame class. Forwards <strong><span id=\"token-087D853FA0F301781A697\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/armstge01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Armstrong<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-95ED9F1985C777DCC1198\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/drillgo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Drillon<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>and <strong><span id=\"token-0D86F5852B3D8696833B2\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=baileac01,bailega01&amp;search=Ace+Bailey&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ace Bailey<\/a><\/span><\/strong> are also inducted as players. Rangers president <strong>William Jennings<\/strong> makes it as a builder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2019:<\/strong> Goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wardca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Ward<\/a><\/strong> signs a one-day contract with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>. This allows him to retire with the team that he won the Stanley Cup with in 2006. Ward also won the Conn Smythe Trophy that season after backstopping the Canes to their own title. He was the first rookie goalie since<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roypa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Roy<\/a><\/strong> to win the playoff MVP award.
