Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 24th featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/belivje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean Beliveau<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Gordie Howe, Jean Beliveau Headline Induction Class<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1972:<\/strong> The longtime friends and rivals highlight one of the most star-studded classes in Hall of Fame history. Both have the mandatory three-year waiting period waived after retiring after the 1970-71 season.<\/p>\n<p>Howe finishes his <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> career with records for games played, goals and points. Beliveau wraps up his <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> stint with 10 Stanley Cups. The duo are inducted with Beliveau&#8217;s longtime teammate <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/geoffbe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bernie Geoffrion<\/a><\/strong>, forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithho01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hooley Smith<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> president Weston Adams.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1980:<\/strong> The Quebec Nordiques change the face of hockey and open the sport to more countries. Brothers <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stastpe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter Stastny<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stastan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anton Stastny<\/a><\/strong> defect while playing for the Czechoslovakian national team. The pair are playing against the USSR in Innsbruck, Austria when the Nordiques organize an escape to Vienna. Quebec owner <strong>Marcel Aubut<\/strong> and director of player personnel <strong>Gilles Leger<\/strong> help the duo and Peter&#8217;s wife reach safety. They fly to Montreal and sign with the Nordiques.<\/p>\n<p>Peter and Anton enjoy instant success with the club as Peter scores 39 goals and 109 points for the team to win the Calder Trophy. Anton also scores 39 goals and gets 85 points. Older brother, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stastma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marian Stastny<\/a><\/strong> joins his brothers for the 1981-82 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1987:<\/strong> Future<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Los Angeles Kings<\/a> great <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kopitan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anze Kopitar<\/a><\/strong> is born in Jesenice, Slovenia. Los Angeles selects him 11th overall of the 2005 NHL Draft. He is the first Slovenian player in the NHL when he makes the team in 2006. Kopitar excels at both ends of the ice and leads the Kings to titles in 2012 and 2014. He wins the <span id=\"token-655C6383D63B55432F980\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Lady Byng<\/span> and <span id=\"token-412208BB3EDF7D2596783\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Selke<\/span> trophies in 2015-16, then wins the Selke again in 2017-18.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> trade <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mullebr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Mullen<\/a><\/strong> to the New York Islanders. New York sends the rights to <strong>Marcus Thuresson<\/strong> in return. Mullen is the younger brother of Hall of Famer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mullejo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Mullen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Colorado Avalanche<\/a> sign <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kerfoal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander Kerfoot<\/a><\/strong> to a deal. Kerfoot was drafted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>, but he did not sign with them.
