We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 23rd featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/harvedo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Harvey<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Doug Harvey Inducted Into Hall of Fame<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1973:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> defenceman headlines this year&#8217;s Hall of Fame class with four others. Harvey was a cornerstone of the 1950s Canadiens dynasty and won seven Norris Trophies. The Montreal native helped his hometown team to six Stanley Cups and was a 10-time All-Star.<\/p>\n<p>Harvey never scores more than 10 goals or gets more than 50 points, but he&#8217;s a shutdown defenceman. He boycotts the ceremony because he felt he should have been inducted with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a> <\/strong>and former teammates <strong><span id=\"token-2E6047F2558B0FE9974B8\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/belivje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean Beliveau<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>and <span id=\"token-DB599CD230CC365015BBF\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/geoffbe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bernie Geoffrion<\/a>.<\/strong> Players <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/raynech01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chuck Rayner<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tommy Smith<\/a><\/strong>, referee Frank Udvari and former Canadiens owner Hartland Molson also make the Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1926:<\/strong> Montreal purchases the contract of goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hainsge01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Hainsworth<\/a><\/strong> from the Saskatoon Crescents of the WHL. The future Hall of Famer won three straight Vezina Trophies and two Stanley Cups with the Habs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1962:<\/strong> Goalie and future broadcaster <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/healygl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glenn Healy<\/a><\/strong> is born in Pickering, Ontario. He plays 15 seasons as a goalie in the NHL with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. Healy goes 166-190 with 47 ties with a 3.37 goals-against average and .887 save percentage in 437 appearances. He wins a Stanley Cup in 1994 for the Rangers after backing up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richtmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Richter<\/a>. Healy becomes an analyst and president of the NHL Alumni Association after retiring in 2001.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1964:<\/strong> Future NHL forward and broadcaster <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/ferrara01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Ferraro<\/a><\/strong> is born in Trail, British Columbia. Ferraro is taken in the fifth round of the 1982 NHL Draft by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hartford Whalers<\/a>. He plays 18 seasons with six teams, including the Islanders, Rangers, Kings, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atlanta Thrashers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>. He retires after the 2001-02 season with 898 points (408 goals, 490 assists) in 1,258 games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2013:<\/strong> The Washington Capitals sign free agent forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/grabomi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mikhail Grabovski<\/a><\/strong> to a free agent deal. He had played with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal previously. The Russian forward scores 13 goals with the team before finishing his career with the Islanders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015:<\/strong> Free agent defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/ehrhoch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Ehrhoff<\/a><\/strong> signs a free agent contract with the Kings. The German blueliner is traded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> during the season for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/scudero01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rob Scuderi<\/a>.
