We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 18th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilmodo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Gilmour<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Maple Leafs Name Doug Gilmour Captain<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1994:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> name the Kingston, Ontario native the team&#8217;s 15th captain. Gilmour gets &#8220;the C&#8221; after the Leafs trade former captain<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/clarkwe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wendel Clark<\/a><\/strong> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quebec Nordiques<\/a>. Toronto&#8217;s top centre is coming off 127 and 111 point seasons with the club.<\/p>\n<p>The offensive production dries up for Gilmour and he&#8217;s traded to the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> New Jersey Devils<\/a> at the February 1997 trade deadline. He goes on to play for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>. The 2011 Hockey Hall of Famer plays one last game for the Maple Leafs before the 2002-03 season.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1986:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> acquire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/podduwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walt Poddubny<\/a><\/strong> in a deal with the Maple Leafs. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/allismi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Allison<\/a><\/strong> comes to Toronto in exchange. Poddubny has 40 goals and finishes with 87 points in his first season with the Blueshirts. He adds 38 goals and 88 points in 1987-88. However, New York trades him to Quebec on August 1, 1988.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1996:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> sign free agent goalie<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hrudeke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kelly Hrudey<\/a><\/strong>, who played the last eight seasons with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>. He spends two seasons with the Sharks before retiring in 1998.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> San Jose obtains goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/vernomi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Vernon<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. Detroit gets a third-round pick in the 1998 NHL Draft and a second-round selection in the 1999 NHL Draft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998:<\/strong> The NHL names <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/loisecl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Claude Loiselle<\/a><\/strong> as the manager of hockey operations. He became an assistant general manager with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> and the Maple Leafs later in his career.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000:<\/strong> The expansion <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/wild\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Wild<\/a> sign undrafted free agent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dupuipa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pascal Dupuis<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. Minnesota takes a chance on the Laval, Quebec native after he scores 50 goals with the Shawinigan Cataractes of the QMJHL. He plays parts of six seasons with the Wild and has brief stints with the Rangers and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atlanta Thrashers<\/a>. However, his biggest success is with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins.<\/a> He becomes a reliable role player and shares a line with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sidney Crosby<\/strong><\/a>. Dupuis scores 25 goals in 2011-12 and is part of the Penguins&#8217; 2009 Stanley Cup winning squad.
