We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 17th, featuring <strong>Bill Torrey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Bill Torrey Out as Islanders GM<\/h3>\n<p>1992: The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> replace Torrey as new owners take over. A group of Long Island businessmen get control of the Isles and install <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/malondo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Don Maloney<\/a><\/strong>. Torrey was the architect of the Islanders teams that won four straight Stanley Cups in the 1980s. He&#8217;s not unemployed for long as the expansion <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida Panthers<\/a> hire him as president.<\/p>\n<p>Maloney and the Islanders reach the Eastern Conference Final in his first season, but struggle in the post-season after that. New York doesn&#8217;t win another playoff series until 2016.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1896:<\/strong> Hockey Hall of Famer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bouchge01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Georges Boucher<\/a><\/strong> is born in Ottawa. He helps his hometown <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> become a dynasty in the 1920s. Boucher helps the Senators win four Stanley Cups in 1920, 1921, 1923 and 1927. The defenceman ends his career with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1931-32. He retires with 117 goals and 204 points and enters the Hall in 1960. His brother, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bouchfr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank Boucher<\/a><\/strong>, makes the Hall of Famer in 1958.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1957:<\/strong> Goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/peetepe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pete Peeters<\/a><\/strong> is born in Edmonton, Alberta. He&#8217;s one of the more successful goalies of the high-scoring 1980s. He&#8217;s drafted in the eighth round by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> and helps them reach the Stanley Cup Final. Peeters has his best stretch of his career with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a>. He wins 40 games, has a 2.36 goals-against-average and eight shutouts in 1982-83. Peeters wins the Vezina Trophy for top goaltender that season. He ends his career with stints with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> and Flyers. The netminder ends his NHL career in 1991 with a record of 246-155 and 51 ties, a 3.08 GAA and 21 shutouts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1977:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> sign free agent goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lowro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Low<\/a><\/strong> from the Capitals. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mckecwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walt McKechnie<\/a><\/strong> and the Red Wings&#8217; third-round choice in 1978 are given to the Capitals as compensation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1983:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> name <strong>Jacques Demers<\/strong> as their new head coach. He replaces <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francem01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emile Francis<\/a><\/strong> behind the bench.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> Detroit acquires <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bergema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc Bergevin<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hankibe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Hankinson<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a>.
