Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 14, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/webersh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shea Weber<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Shea Weber Born in British Columbia<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1985:<\/strong> The hard-shooting <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> defenceman is born in Sicamous, British Columbia. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/predators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nashville Predators<\/a> select Weber in the second round of the 2003 NHL Draft. The 49th overall pick scores 166 goals in 11 seasons with Nashville. Weber&#8217;s shot goes at 108 miles per hour at the 2015 and 2016 All-Star Weekends.<\/p>\n<p>The Predators trade him in a blockbuster deal involving <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/subbapk01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">P.K. Subban<\/a><\/strong>. Weber has scored 52 goals in 227 games with the Habs. He&#8217;s logged double-digit goals in three of his four seasons in Montreal.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><b>1926: <\/b>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> sign <span id=\"token-B008CB97131BCEEA49C81\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/abelcl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clarence Abel<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. He&#8217;s the first American-born player to get a regular roster spot. He plays three seasons with the Blueshirts and helps them win the Stanley Cup in 1928. The Chicago Black Hawks buy Abel and helps them win a championship in 1934 before retiring.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1989:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> fire head coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/armstge01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Armstrong<\/a><\/strong> after only 47 games. Toronto hires <strong>Doug Carpenter<\/strong> as his replacement and lasts 91 games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1996:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mighty Ducks of Anaheim<\/a> ink free agent winger <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kurrija01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jari Kurri<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. Kurri split time with the Rangers and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a> during the previous season. He scores 13 goals in his only campaign in Anaheim.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> add veteran goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tugnuro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Tugnutt<\/a><\/strong> via free agency. He spends four seasons with the Senators and has a great season in 1998-99. Tugnutt has 1.79 goals-against-average and 22-10-8 record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> sign free agent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/grattch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Gratton<\/a><\/strong> to a deal. Gratton plays one full season with the Flyers before he goes back to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> after 26 games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2009:<\/strong> Former Maple Leafs captain <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kennete01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ted Kennedy<\/a><\/strong> dies at the age of 83. He won the Stanley Cup five times in his 14-year career with Toronto. Kennedy wins the Hart Trophy in 1954-55 in his final season.
