We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 12th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/savarse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Serge Savard<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Canadiens Serge Savard Retires<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1981:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> defenceman says he&#8217;s &#8220;done with hockey&#8221; after a long career. Savard played 15 seasons with the Habs and totaled 412 points in 917 games. He also wins the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP in the 1969 Stanley Cup Playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>However, he&#8217;s lured out retirement by former teammate and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> general manager <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fergujo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Ferguson<\/a><\/strong>. &#8220;The Senator&#8221; helps out a young Winnipeg defence and the team makes the post-season. He plays two seasons with the Jets before permanently retiring in 1983. Savard becomes a Hockey Hall of Famer in 1986.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1978:<\/strong> Women&#8217;s hockey great <strong>Hayley Wickenheiser<\/strong> is born in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. She wins four Olympic gold medals in women&#8217;s hockey for Canada and scores 18 goals in 26 games. Wickenheiser also wins seven golds and six silvers in World Championship play.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> sign former top overall draft pick <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wickedo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Wickenheiser<\/a><\/strong> to a free agent contract. He was the first overall selection of the 1980 NHL Draft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2008:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> name <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gordosc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Gordon<\/a><\/strong> as their new head coach. He replaces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nolante01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ted Nolan<\/a> after the Islanders fail to reach the playoffs. However, Gordon misses the post-season in his two full seasons in charge. He is replaced by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/capuaja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Capuano<\/a><\/strong> 17 games into the 2010-11 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong> Longtime NHL coach and executive <strong>Bryan Murray<\/strong> dies at the age of 74. Murray he passes away after a battle with colon cancer. Murray was general manager of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida Panthers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anaheim Ducks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ottawa Senators<\/a>. He also coached the Washington Capitals and all the teams he was general manager for. He wins the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/adamsja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Adams<\/a> Award for coach of the year in 1984 with Washington. Murray was a special adviser to Senators general manger Pierre Dorion at the time of his passing. He left his job as GM in April 2016 to focus on his health.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2019:<\/strong> Florida announces that it will retire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/luongro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roberto Luongo<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s jersey on March 7, 2020. The announcement comes two months after the 19-year veteran retires.
