Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 9th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Kings Acquire Wayne Gretzky From Oilers<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> The unthinkable happens as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a> get the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> star in a blockbuster deal. Gretzky&#8217;s trade comes three months after the Oilers win their fourth Stanley Cup in five season. &#8220;The Great One&#8221; also won the Conn Smythe Trophy for the second time in his career. Kings owner Bruce McNall offers Oilers owner Peter Pocklington $15 million, forwards <strong><span id=\"token-143AD2F06A9D642CA5DAF\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/carsoji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy Carson<\/a><\/span>, <span id=\"token-219933B763B11FC65189D\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gelinma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martin Gelinas<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>and three first-round draft picks for Gretzky. Los Angeles gets defenceman <strong><span id=\"token-849CD9F68036F92259886\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcsorma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marty McSorley<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and forward <span id=\"token-0B66EEC5A08EC3FC95D93\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/krushmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Krushelnyski<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gretzky leads the Kings to the 1993 Final, but they lose to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>. Edmonton takes a Stanley Cup in 1990, but the franchise is never the same. The Great One&#8217;s move to the U.S. does help the game grown in non-traditional markets.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1964:<\/strong> Future Hockey Hall of Famer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brett Hull<\/a><\/strong> is born in Belleville, Ontario. He is the son of Hall of Famer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Hull<\/a><\/strong> and is taken by the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Calgary Flames<\/a> in the sixth round of the 1984 NHL Draft. The younger Hull plays college hockey at Minnesota-Duluth and is traded to the St. Louis Blue in 1988. He becomes an instant star with 41 goals in 1988-89. Hull then leads the NHL with 72 goals in 1989-90, 86 in 1990-91 and 70 in 1991-92.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars<\/a> would sign him in 1998 and he&#8217;d help the team win their first Stanley Cup. He&#8217;d add another championship with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> in 2002. Hull finishes with 741 goals, fourth on the NHL&#8217;s all-time list, and joins his father in the Hall of Fame when he&#8217;s inducted in 2009.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1983:<\/strong> Detroit signs free agent and future Hall of Fame defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/parkbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brad Park<\/a><\/strong>. He&#8217;d play two seasons with the Red Wings before ending his career.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> The Montreal Canadiens acquire<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemiejo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jocelyn Lemieux<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darrell May<\/a><\/strong> and a second-round pick. (That would later become <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/brisepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrice Brisebois<\/a><\/strong>) from St. Louis. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/momesse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergio Momesso<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/riendvi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vincent Riendeau<\/a><\/strong> would be acquired by the Blues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> name <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/campbco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colin Campbell<\/a><\/strong> as their new head coach. He replaces <strong>Mike Keenan,<\/strong> who went to the Blues to become their coach\/general manager.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> The Rangers poach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/ferrara01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Ferraro<\/a><\/strong> from the rival <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a>.
