Elias played in parts of 20 seasons in the NHL, all with the New Jersey Devils. He was a part of two of the franchise’s three Stanley Cups in 1999-00, and in 2002-03. Elias has not played in a game this season, and never signed a contract, but he will take warm-ups with the Devils in their season ending game on April 8th.

Patrik Elias Announces Retirement from NHL

Impact on New Jersey

Patrik Elias is the statistical leader in many categories for the Devils’ franchise. He leads the Devils in goals (408), assists (617), and points (1025). He also totaled 125 in 162 playoff games, another franchise record. Elias was instrumental in the success of the Devils in the early 2000s and in their Stanley Cup runs. He scored at least 20 goals in 10 of his 20 seasons; one being a 40 goal season, and three others with 30+ goals. It goes without saying that his consistent offensive impact will be missed in New Jersey.

What Next?

Elias will have his number retired by the Devils before a game next season. The date has not yet been set. Elias has received many congratulations from fans and former teammates on his career.

Congratulations to my long time teammate and friend Patrik Elias on his Retirement. What was once a second round draft pick in 1994 now has the potential to be in the Hall of Fame. This is symbolic of an era ending as the Devils are starting to look toward the future and building a new team. Elias’ love and passion for the game will be gone, but never forgotten.

Main Photo:

Embed from Getty Images

Long time NHLer Patrik Elias has officially announced his retirement from the NHL.
