We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 6th, featuring <strong>Barry Trotz.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Barry Trotz Hired by Nashville<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/predators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Nashville Predators<\/a> hire Trotz as the team&#8217;s first head coach. Trotz led the Portland Pirates to the AHL Calder Cup championship in 1994. General manager <strong>David Poile<\/strong> picks Trotz to lead the club in for the inaugural 1998-99 season. Poile and Trotz worked together in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> organization.<\/p>\n<p>He stays with the Predators&#8217; organization for 15 seasons and 1,196 games, going 557-479-100 with 60 ties. Trotz is let go in April 2014, but the Capitals hire him a month later. He gets that elusive Stanley Cup in 2018, but leaves for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> after not being able to work out a new deal.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1993:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> acquire veteran Russian winger <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/makarse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergei Makarov<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hartford Whalers<\/a>. Makarov completed a draft-day trade made in June between the two teams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mighty Ducks of Anaheim<\/a> fire general manager<strong> Jack Ferriera<\/strong>. Team president <strong>Pierre Gauthier<\/strong> takes over in the role.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phoenix Coyotes<\/a> sign veteran forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hullbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brett Hull<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. Hull would only play five games for the team after the lockout wipes out the 2004-05 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2005:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> sign free agent forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/whitnra01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Whitney<\/a><\/strong> to a two-year contract. Whitney has nine goals and 15 points and helps the Hurricanes win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. He stays with the club for five seasons and totals 1,064 points (385 goals, 679 assists) in 1,330 games during 22 NHL seasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2010: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/modanmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Modano<\/a><\/strong> signs with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> after 20 seasons with the Minnesota North Stars\/<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars<\/a> organization. Modano is a Livonia, Mich. native and wears number 90 for the first time in his career. Injuries limit the American to 40 games and gets four goals and 15 points. He retires that summer with 1,374 points (561 goals, 813 assists) in 1,499 NHL games.<\/p>\n<p>Detroit also brings back former defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chelich01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Chelios<\/a><\/strong> in a front office role after his retirement.
