So how did our goalie <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2020\/07\/22\/breaking-down-the-goalie-matchups-in-the-nhl-play-in-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Play-In predictions<\/a> go?<\/p>\n<h2>Unpredictable Play-In Predictions<\/h2>\n<p>Only a fool would try predicting pretty much anything about this year. And there&#8217;s no way they should put those play-in predictions on the internet for all to see. Excuse me, just going to dampen the bells on our hat before continuing.<\/p>\n<h3>West Guesses, Best Guesses<\/h3>\n<h4>Calgary Flames vs Winnipeg Jets<\/h4>\n<p>Our Guess: <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rittida01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Rittich<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> vs <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/helleco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor Hellebuyck<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who played: <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/talboca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cam Talbot<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> vs Hellebuyck<\/p>\n<p>One out of two is still a pass, right? Okay, maybe not when the one you get right is the easiest pick of the playoffs. As it is, Talbot did reasonably well but faced only 18 <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> shots on the night. We thought the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> would go with the signed younger guy over the UFA veteran, but it&#8217;s tough to criticize success.<\/p>\n<h4>Vancouver Canucks vs Minnesota Wild<\/h4>\n<p>Our Guess: <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/marksja02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacob Markstrom<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> vs <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/staloal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Stalock<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who Played: Markstrom vs Stalock<\/p>\n<p>Woo! Two-for-two! One was a gimmie, but the other was a genuine coin-flip, so we&#8217;re happy to take credit here. Markstrom lost, but only gave up two power-play goals to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/wild\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Wild<\/a> on 30 shots. Stalock did well enough to blank the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a>, and continues to work well with coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/evasode01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dean Evason<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s system.<\/p>\n<h4>Nashville Predators vs Arizona Coyotes<\/h4>\n<p>Our Guess: <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sarosju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Juuse Saros<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> vs <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kuempda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darcy Kuemper<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who Played: Saros vs Kuemper<\/p>\n<p>Called it! <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rinnepe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pekka Rinne<\/a><\/strong> has officially passed the torch with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/predators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nashville Predators<\/a>&#8216; choice to go with Saros. With their loss to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arizona Coyotes<\/a>, it could still swing back. But if it does, it will only be for the playoffs. Rinne is very likely an expensive backup next season. Arizona is likely going to move one of their pair and with the Game One decision that&#8217;s <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/raantan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antti Raanta<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Edmonton Oilers vs Chicago Blackhawks<\/h4>\n<p>Our Guess: <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/koskimi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mikko Koskinen<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> vs <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crawfco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Crawford<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who Played: <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Smith<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> vs Crawford<\/p>\n<p>Smith was traded for because of his experience, so his start shouldn&#8217;t be a huge surprise. But we were hugely surprised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a>&#8216; choice, calling this &#8220;the most predictable of the goalie match-ups.&#8221; As were the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>, who happily chased Smith from the net with five goals on just 23 shots. Edmonton reversed course the next game, to the surprise of no one.<\/p>\n<h3>East Guesses, Better Guesses?<\/h3>\n<h4>Toronto Maple Leafs vs Columbus Blue Jackets<\/h4>\n<p>Our Guess: <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderfr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frederik Andersen<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> vs <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/korpijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joonas Korpisalo<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who Played: Andersen vs Korpisalo<\/p>\n<p>Andersen gave up a single goal on 34 shots and still came away with the loss. Some games just go like that &#8211; but shouldn&#8217;t have for the high-powered <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. Korpisalo had a lot of help from the rest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blue-jackets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> but was still full value for the win. Expect the Leafs to come out angry next game, but no one is changing their goaltenders.<\/p>\n<h4>New York Islanders vs Florida Panthers<\/h4>\n<p>Our Guess: <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/v\/varlasi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Semyon Varlamov<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> vs <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bobrose01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergei Bobrovsky<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who Played: Varlamov vs Bobrovsky<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re on a roll! Another coin-flip for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> and they went with the goalie signed for another three years. From the outside, it sounds odd that the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida Panthers<\/a> might not go with their $10 million dollar man, but Bobrovsky had an atrocious year and was handily outplayed by rookie <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/driedch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Driedger<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>. Bobrovsky acquitted himself well in his first test, so he&#8217;s not getting moved out.<\/p>\n<h4>Carolina Hurricanes vs New York Rangers<\/h4>\n<p>Our Guess: <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/reimeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Reimer<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> vs <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shestig01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Igor Shesterkin<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who Played: <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mrazepe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Petr Mrazek<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> vs <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lundqhe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henrik Lundqvist<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And the roll goes splat. Though to be fair to ourselves, Shesterkin would have started for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> but was listed as &#8220;unfit to play&#8221; before the match. King Henrik let the first shot past but was solid the rest of the way. He&#8217;s likely got the ball now, but they won&#8217;t hesitate to change. As for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>, they went with Mrazek based on last year&#8217;s playoff memories, which&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/playoffs\/2019-carolina-hurricanes-vs-washington-capitals-eastern-first-round.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">okay, fair<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Pittsburgh Penguins vs Montreal Canadiens<\/h4>\n<p>Our Guess: <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/j\/jarrytr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tristan Jarry<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> vs <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/priceca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carey Price<\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who Player: <strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrama02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Murray<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> vs Price<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/priceca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carey Price<\/a><\/strong> being Carey Price for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> isn&#8217;t a surprise. The Toronto Bubble will inflate and blow into the sky before he gets switched out. Murray starting for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> is&#8230; okay, sure. Jarry has no playoff experience while Murray is wearing two rings, and that&#8217;s tough to argue with.<\/p>\n<h3>Total Score<\/h3>\n<p>We went 11-for-16 on our goalie play-in predictions. Oof. That&#8217;s a C+ at best. Still, compared to the year so far? Hockey&#8217;s back, and we&#8217;re watching it.
