We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for August 1st, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilbero01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rod Gilbert<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilbero01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rod Gilbert<\/a> Signs With Rangers<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1961:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> New York Rangers<\/a> sign the Montreal native to his first professional contract. He signs after finishing his fourth season with the Guelph Royals of the OHA. Gilbert earns a game-tying assist in his debut on Nov. 27, 1960 in a game versus the Chicago Blackhawks. He misses much of the 1961-62 season due to back surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Gilbert earns a spot in the lineup after <span id=\"token-97836028EDB207FC5D294\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong>Ken<\/strong> <strong>Schinkel<\/strong><\/span> is injured and scores twice in Game 3 of the semifinals. He puts up five points in four games and becomes a full-time player the next season. The forward retires in November 1988 and is still the Rangers&#8217; all-time leader in goals (406) and points (1,021).<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> The Rangers deal <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/podduwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walt Poddubny<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gronsja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jari Gronstrand<\/a><\/strong> and<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bellbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bruce Bell<\/a><\/strong> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quebec Nordiques<\/a>. <strong>Norm Rochefort<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lafreja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Lafreniere<\/a><\/strong> come to New York in return.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1991:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> sign free-agent defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dahlke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Dahl<\/a><\/strong> from Bowling Green of the NCAA. He plays parts of five seasons in two different stints with the Flames.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> sign veteran forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/krushmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Krushelnyski<\/a><\/strong> to a deal. He plays 20 games with the team before ending his career with stints in the AHL and Italy.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/panthers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida Panthers<\/a> name <strong>Bryan Murray<\/strong> as their new general manager. He replaces <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/clarkbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Clarke<\/a><\/strong>, who went back to the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mighty Ducks of Anaheim<\/a> sign free-agent forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sandsto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tomas Sandstrom<\/a><\/strong>. He lasts two seasons with the team before finishing his career in Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>The Flames ink veteran free agent forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dowdji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim Dowd<\/a><\/strong> to a deal. Dowd bounces between AHL Saint John and Calgary during his tenure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Ottawa Senators<\/a> hire <strong>Roger Neilson<\/strong> as an assistant coach. He does coach the last two games of the 2001-02 season to reach 1,000 games coached.<\/p>\n<p>Calgary hires <strong>Don Hay<\/strong> as the team&#8217;s new head coach. He replaces <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/suttebr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Sutter<\/a><\/strong>, who was fired at the end of the previous season.
