We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 30th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/crosbsi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sidney Crosby<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Sidney Crosby Taken First Overall by Penguins<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2005:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> get their franchise player when they take the Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia native. Crosby is billed as a generational talent after plying his trade with Rimouski of the QMJHL. Pittsburgh wins a weighted lottery because of their worst record during the 2003-04 season. There was no season in 2004-05 due to the lockout and special drawing was held.<\/p>\n<p>Crosby wins three Stanley Cups with the Penguins and two Conn Smythe Awards. The draft also sees the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> take <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/priceca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carey Price<\/a><\/strong> at No. 5. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kopitan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anze Kopitar<\/a><\/strong> is selected 11th by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a> and<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hornqpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patric Hornqvist<\/a><\/strong> is taken last at 230 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/predators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nashville Predators<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1936:<\/strong> Montreal names two-time Stanley Cup-winning <strong>Cecil Hart<\/strong> as its new head coach. He replaces <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/manthsy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sylvio Mantha<\/a><\/strong> behind the bench. Hart gets fired 30 games into the 1938-39 season after the Habs struggle to sixth. He dies after a long illness in July 1940. Hart&#8217;s father, David, donated the league&#8217;s MVP trophy in the 1923 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1982:<\/strong> Pittsburgh signs undrafted free agent defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcsorma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marty McSorley<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. He spends parts of two seasons with the Penguins before joining the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998:<\/strong> Six-time Stanley Cup winner <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/loweke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Lowe<\/a><\/strong> calls it a career. The former Oilers and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> defenceman plays 19 seasons in the league. He was the first draft pick after the Oilers joined the NHL. Lowe becomes Oilers&#8217; coach in 1999 and is promoted to general manager in 2000. He adds titles of president of hockey operations in 2008 and vice chair, alternate governor of Oilers Entertainment Group in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> sign <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blue-jackets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> leading scorer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/whitnra01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Whitney<\/a>. He lasts one season in Hockeytown before heading to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a>. Whitney would be instrumental in Carolina&#8217;s only Stanley Cup in 2006.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/i\/iginlja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarome Iginla<\/a><\/strong> retires in Calgary after 20 seasons in the league. He spends 16 of those campaigns with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> after coming over in a trade from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars.<\/a> Iginla is the Flames all-time leader in goals (525) and points (1,095).
