We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 27th, featuring the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/prongch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Pronger<\/a><\/strong> for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shanabr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brendan Shanahan<\/a><\/strong> deal.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Blues Trade Brendan Shanahan to Whalers for Chris Pronger<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> St. Louis Blues<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hartford Whalers<\/a> pull off a sweep for a pair of future Hall of Famers. St. Louis sends <strong>Brendan Shanahan<\/strong> to Hartford in exchange for <strong>Chris Pronger.<\/strong> His career takes off while with the Blues for nine seasons. Pronger helps the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> to the 2006 Stanley Cup Final. He wins his coveted title with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anaheim Ducks<\/a> in 2007. Injuries force him to retire as a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> in 2012 and enters the Hall in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Shanahan scores 44 goals for the Whalers in his first season, but is traded to the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Detroit Red Wings<\/a> in Oct. 1996. The power forward wins Stanley Cups in 1997, 1998 and 2002 with the Wings. He retires with 1,354 points (656 goals, 698 assists) in 1,524 NHL games. Shanahan makes it into the Hall in 2013.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1986:<\/strong> Veteran defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lewisda02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dave Lewis<\/a><\/strong> signs a deal with Detroit after leaving the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>. Lewis ends up coaching the Red Wings in 2002 and he wins two Central Division titles. However, Detroit is eliminated opening round and he is fired at the end of the 2003-04 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> Inventor Frank Zamboni passes away at the age of 87. He creates the Zamboni machine that resurfaces the ice in short order. The process is becomes shortened to a 15-minute job that requires only one person. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> are the first NHL team to use one in 1954 and they become popular everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994:<\/strong> The Flyers ink left winger <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/podeish01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shjon Podein<\/a> <\/b>to a deal. He scored 15 goals with Philadelphia in the 1995-96 season. Podein repeats the feat with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a> in 2000-01.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> sign veteran forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/saccojo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Sacco<\/a><\/strong> to a contract.
