We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 23rd, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nashri01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick Nash<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Rick Nash Sent to New York<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2012:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blue-jackets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> send the former top overall pick to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a>. Columbus gets <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/anisiar01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artem Anisimov<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/dubinbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Dubinsky<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/erixoti01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tim Erixon<\/a><\/strong> and New York&#8217;s 2014 first-round pick. Nash scores a career-high 42 goals in 2014-15 and helps the Rangers reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>However, Nash has struggles in the post-season and is traded to the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Boston Bruins<\/a> at the 2018 deadline. He retires in January 2019 after dealing with post-concussion symptoms. The Brampton, Ontario native finishes with 437 goals and 805 points in 1,060 games.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1897: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/duttore01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red Dutton<\/a><\/strong> is born in Russell, Manitoba on this date. He becomes the second league president in 1943 after <strong>Frank Calder<\/strong> dies. Dutton is a player, coach and general manager of the Brooklyn Americans before the team suspends itself in 1942. The Americans would later fold four years later. Dutton serves until 1946, when he resigns to run his businesses in Calgary. <strong>Clarence Campbell<\/strong> would take over as president for Dutton, who is inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1958. He doesn&#8217;t attend a game until he drops the puck for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> first game in October 1980.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1957:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> trade future Hall of Famers <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lindste01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ted Lindsay<\/a><\/strong> and<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hallgl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glenn Hall<\/a><\/strong> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>. Detroit receives <strong><span id=\"token-E89B48621934327766AAD\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/basseha01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hank Bassen<\/a><\/span>, Bill Preston, <span id=\"token-A111C455561CFA3CA8C93\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wilsojo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Wilson<\/a><\/span> and <\/strong><span id=\"token-110C5231AFE80CFE693BE\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kennefo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forbes Kennedy<\/a><\/strong> in return. Lindsay plays three seasons with Chicago before he retires. However, he returns in 1964-65 after four years away from the game. Hall helps the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 1961 and plays in 502 straight games. Lindsay makes the Hall of Fame in 1966 and Hall joins him in 1975.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phoenix Coyotes<\/a> sign free agent forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tocchri01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick Tocchet<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. He had spent the previous season with Boston and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>2015:<\/b>\u00a0<strong>Lou Lamoriello<\/strong> resigns as president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> to become general manager of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. Lamoriello&#8217;s first draft pick, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/shanabr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brendan Shanahan<\/a><\/strong>, hires him to rebuild the Leafs. Toronto makes the post-season in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Lamoriello is named senior advisor when Kyle Dubas is named general manager on May 11, 2018.
