Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 20th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/datsypa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pavel Datsyuk<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Pavel Datsyuk is Born<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1978:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Detroit Red Wings<\/a> &#8220;Magic Man&#8221; is born in Sverdlovsk. USSR. Detroit takes him in the sixth round, 171st overall of the 1998 NHL Draft. However, he doesn&#8217;t come to North America until 2001-02. Datsyuk is worth the wait as helps the Red Wings win their third Stanley Cup in six seasons.<\/p>\n<p>He finishes his NHL career with 918 points (314 goals, 604 assists) in 953 games during 14 seasons. The Russian playmaker has back-to-back 97-point seasons in 2007-08 and 2008-09. Detroit adds another championship in 2007-08 and becomes a shootout master. His &#8220;Datsyuk Deke&#8221; is a feared move in showdowns with opposing goalies.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1953:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> New York Rangers<\/a> acquire goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bowerjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johnny Bower<\/a><\/strong> from Cleveland of the AHL. New York sends goalie <strong><span id=\"token-1F22568AB17FE71FF42B3\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francem01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emile Francis<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, forward <span id=\"token-87523BF2A03F53B4AB080\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/straine01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Neil Strain<\/a><\/strong> and cash to the AHL club. Bower plays every minute of the 1953-54 season, but the Rangers miss the post-season. He loses his job to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/worslgu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gump Worsley<\/a> <\/strong>before the 1954-55 season and is stuck in the minors the next four years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"token-87523BF2A03F53B4AB080\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">However, Bower revives his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs after joining them in 1958. He plays for the Leafs for 12 seasons and helps them win four titles. Bower is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1973: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/forsbpe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter Forsberg<\/a><\/strong> is born in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden and becomes one of the best players of the 1990s and early 200s. He was drafted sixth overall in the 1991 NHL Draft by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a>. However, he&#8217;s traded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quebec Nordiques<\/a> as part of the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lindrer01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Lindros<\/a><\/strong> swap.<\/p>\n<p>He helps Sweden win the 1994 Winter Olympics with an iconic shootout goal. Forsberg wins the Calder Trophy with 50 points (15 goals, 35 assists) in 47 games in 1994-95. The team moves to Denver and he posts 116 points (30 goals, 86 assists) as the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a> win the Stanley Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Forsberg retires in 2010 with 885 points (249 goals, 636 assists) and is elected to the Hall of Fame in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sharks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Jose Sharks<\/a> hire <strong>Deborah Wright<\/strong> as a part-time scout. She&#8217;s the first female scout in NHL history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2016: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richabr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brad Richards<\/a><\/strong> retires after winning Stanley Cups with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>. Richards ends his career with 932 points (298 goals, 634 assists) in 1,126 regular-season games.
