We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 19th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/i\/irvindi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dick Irvin<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Hall of Fame Coach Dick Irvin Born<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1892:<\/strong> The four-time Stanley Cup-winning coach is born in Hamilton, Ontario. Irvin plays 94 games in his career with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Black Hawks<\/a>. However, his biggest success is when he becomes a coach.<\/p>\n<p>Irvin leads the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> to a Stanley Cup in 1932, but he&#8217;s known for his time with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a>. He helped the Habs win championships in <span id=\"token-6B59DB3BB6D0318A832AE\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">1944<\/span>, <span id=\"token-F02A7DEBDB64D6E626C8B\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">1946<\/span> and <span id=\"token-78E549331F463B587E19D\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">1953. Irvin&#8217;s 15 seasons with the Canadiens are the most by any coach in their history, and he goes 431-313-152 in 896 games. He also helps the careers of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/richama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maurice Richard<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/belivje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean Beliveau<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s let go after losing 3-1 in Game 7 to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> in the 1955 Stanley Cup Final. Irvin coaches the Blackhawks, who gave him his first coaching job. However, he retires after one season and passes away on May 16, 1957.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winnipeg Jets<\/a> trade left winger <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/roonest01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Rooney<\/a><\/strong> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>. New Jersey sends back goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/chevral01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alain Chevrier<\/a><\/strong> in return.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> ink free agent blue-liner <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lefebsy01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sylvain Lefebvre<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. He played previously with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a> and he plays parts of four seasons in New York.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/jets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atlanta Thrashers<\/a> sign free-agent defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kruppuw01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Uwe Krupp<\/a><\/strong> to a deal. Krupp had played two seasons with Detroit and he retires after one year in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mighty Ducks of Anaheim<\/a> add free agent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fedorse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergei Fedorov<\/a><\/strong> from Detroit. Fedorov had played his entire 13-year career with the Red Wings before signing in Southern California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2010: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kovalil01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ilya Kovalchuk<\/a><\/strong> signs a 17-year, $102 million deal with the Devils. However, that contract is blocked by the league and he signs a 15-year, $100 million pact. The NHL made New Jersey give up $3 million, a third-round draft choice in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and one future first-round draft pick within the next four seasons. However, the league backed down from some of the sanctions for New Jersey circumventing the cap.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2011:<\/strong> Detroit goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/osgooch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Osgood<\/a><\/strong> retires after 14 seasons and 11 in Hockeytown. He finishes his career with 401 wins in 744 games, a 2.49 goals-against average and 50 shutouts, 39 with the Red Wings.
