We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 18th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/toewsjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Toews<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Jonathan Toews Becomes Blackhawks Captain<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2008:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> name the Winnipeg, Manitoba native the team&#8217;s captain. He becomes the youngest skipper in history at 20 years and 70 days. Toews is given the &#8220;C&#8221; after netting 20 goals and 54 points in 64 games.<\/p>\n<p>He helps the Blackhawks turn into a model franchise in decade along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kanepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Kane<\/a>. Chicago wins Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013 and 2015 with Toews as captain. Toews wins the Conn Smythe at the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/messima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Messier<\/a> Award in 2015.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a> hire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nolante01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ted Nolan<\/a><\/strong> as their new head coach. He replaces <strong>John Muckler<\/strong>, who stays on as general manager. Nolan has two different stints as bench boss of the Sabres.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> It&#8217;s a banner day for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> as head coach<strong> Scotty Bowman<\/strong> signs a two-year deal to stay in the role. Detroit also promotes <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hollake01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ken Holland<\/a><\/strong> to general manager after three years as assistant GM.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman guides the Wings to two more titles in 1998 and 2002. His last act is lacing up his skates and getting a victory lap with the Cup. He retires as the holder of NHL records for wins and championships by a coach.<\/p>\n<p>Holland adds the 2008 Stanley Cup as general manager and Detroit wins the President&#8217;s Trophy in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008. The Red Wings make the post-season 25 straight times before failing to qualify in 2016-17. Holland is forced out as GM in 2019 in favour of former Detroit captain <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/y\/yzermst01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steve Yzerman<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/snowga01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Garth Snow<\/a><\/strong> becomes the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> general manger right after retiring. The former goalie replaces <strong>Neil Smith<\/strong> in the role. Smith was only hires six weeks earlier, but Snow lasts 12 years on the job. <strong><span id=\"token-01CA20410872B6F8936A2\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Lou Lamoriello<\/span><\/strong> replaces Snow on June 5, 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2019: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Francis<\/a><\/strong> is named the first general manager of the expansion Seattle franchise. Francis plays for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hartford Whalers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> before retiring in 2005. He collects ,798 points (549 goals, 1,249 assists) in his Hall of Fame career.
