We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 17th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gainebo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bob Gainey<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Bob Gainey Retires<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1989:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> great calls it a career after 16 seasons with the club. He ends his career as one of the best defensive forwards in the game. Gainey wins the Selke Trophy for best defensive forward four straight years from 1978-1981. He wins five Stanley Cup, including four in a row from 1976-1979. Gainey was awarded the 1979 Conn Smyth trophy as the playoff MVP.<\/p>\n<p>Gainey moves into coaching and management and adds another title as general manager of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars<\/a> in 1999. He also led the Minnesota North Stars to the 1991 Stanley Cup Final, where they lost to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> in six games. The Peterborough, Ontario native was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1989:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> select <strong>Neil Smith<\/strong> as general manager. He would replace <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a><\/strong> in the role and helps build the 1994 Cup-winning team. Smith&#8217;s Rangers also won the President&#8217;s Trophy twice in his tenure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> make <strong>Mike Keenan<\/strong> their new head coach and general manager. Keenan left the Stanley Cup champion Rangers two days earlier due to &#8220;breach of contractual obligation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> hire <strong>Pierre Page<\/strong> as the team&#8217;s new head coach. He replaces <strong>Dave King<\/strong> behind the bench.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> Montreal signs former rival goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/moogan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andy Moog<\/a><\/strong> to a deal. Moog had previously played with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oiers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> and the Stars.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a> would ink free agent defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/ledyagr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grant Ledyard<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. He gets sent to Boston at the trade deadline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> sign 17-year veteran goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/barrato01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Barrasso<\/a><\/strong>. He sat out the previous season and played in 34 games before going to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Detroit Red Wings<\/a> hire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lewisda02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dave Lewis<\/a><\/strong> to replace <strong>Scotty Bowman<\/strong> as new head coach. Lewis wins two Central Division titles, but Detroit is ousted in the first round both years. He is eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/2020\/07\/15\/today-in-hockey-history-detroit-red-wings-hire-mike-babcock\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">replaced<\/a> by <strong>Mike Babcock<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a> announce the signing of forward <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/czerkma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mariusz Czerkawski<\/a><\/b>. He returns to Long Island after a short stint with the Canadiens.
