We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 15th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gretzwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Gretzky<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Wayne Gretzky Says &#8220;I Do&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Edmonton Oilers<\/a> centre marries actress Janet Jones in a large ceremony in Edmonton. Some media outlets compare the ceremony to a royal wedding. The couple met when Gretzky was a celebrity judge on the show &#8220;Dance Fever&#8221; earlier in the decade.<\/p>\n<p>However, they don&#8217;t become a couple until they meet again at a basketball game. Thousands of well-wishers line the route from the church to the reception. The newlyweds don&#8217;t stay in Alberta long as Gretzky is dealt to the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Los Angeles Kings<\/a> less than a month later.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1933:<\/strong> Former NHL goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/klymkju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julian Klymkiw<\/a><\/strong> was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He only makes one appearance in the league. Klymkiw is the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> trainer and is pressed into duty for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> on Oct. 12, 1958. Regular goalie<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/worslgu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gump Worsley<\/a><\/strong> is injured and Klymkiw allows two goals on 19 shots as an emergency goalie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1990:<\/strong> Free agent defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/stevesc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Stevens<\/a><\/strong> signs with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a>. His time in the city isn&#8217;t long as he heads to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> next season and cements his Hall of Famer career. Stevens wins three Stanley Cups and is a 10-time All-Star for New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/lightning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> sign free agent defenceman\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/racinyv01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yves Racine<\/a><\/strong>. He previously played with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> before playing seven season in Finland and Germany.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998:<\/strong> Tampa Bay signs free agent forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/clarkwe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wendel Clark<\/a><\/strong> after a second stint with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. Detroit gets him at the trade deadline and retires after the 1999-2000 season.<\/p>\n<p>St. Louis signs free agent forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngsc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Young<\/a><\/strong> to a deal. He gets 40 goals in the 2000-01 season and gets a spot on the 2002 U.S. Olympic team. The Americans win the silver medal after losing to Team Canada in the gold-medal game at Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a> send backup goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/billicr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Billington<\/a><\/strong> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> for future considerations.
