We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 14th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/esposph01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Esposito<\/a> Hired as Rangers GM<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1986:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a> hire the Hockey Hall of Famer to help the team end their Stanley Cup drought. He replaces <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/patricr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Patrick<\/a><\/strong> as the team&#8217;s general manager. Esposito promises the bring the silver chalice back to Broadway for the first time since 1940.<\/p>\n<p>He hopes to build off of the Blueshirts trip to the Wales Conference Finals. However, Esposito is fired in 1989 after the team is ousted in the Patrick Division semifinals. New York ends its Cup drought in 1994 by beating the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> The league officially relocates the California Seals to Cleveland to become the Barons. It&#8217;s the first relocation of a franchise since Ottawa was moved to St. Louis in 1934.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1989:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quebec Nordiques<\/a> sign<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laflegu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Lafleur<\/a><\/strong> after his one-year comeback with the Rangers. He plays two more seasons and scores 12 goals each year before retiring for good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a> sign free-agent forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nichobe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bernie Nicholls<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. He played the last season-and-a-half with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> sign former four-time Stanley Cup-winning goalie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fuhrgr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grant Fuhr<\/a><\/strong> to a deal. Fuhr wins four titles with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a> comes over after spending the last season with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>. He goes 108-87 with 41 ties in 249 games during four seasons with the Blues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> acquire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bassebo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bob Bassen<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/gaveyaa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Gavey<\/a><\/strong> comes to the Stars to complete the deal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/q\/quinnpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Quinn<\/a><\/strong> becomes the general manager of the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. Quinn becomes the only active coach\/general manager at the time. He keeps both roles until <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fergujo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Ferguson<\/a><\/strong> takes over Aug. 29, 2003. Quinn stays on as head coach until the end of the 2005-06 season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/wild\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Wild<\/a> sign Finnish forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/laaksan01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antti Laaksonen<\/a><\/strong>. He played previously for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> The Rangers sign free-agent defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/d\/devrigr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greg de Vries<\/a><\/strong> to a new deal.
