We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 13th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcphege01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George McPhee<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>George McPhee Hired as Knights GM<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2016:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/knights\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vegas Golden Knights<\/a> hire the former <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a> general manager to the same position. McPhee helped the team to seven Southeast Division titles and 10 post-season berths. Washington also made the Stanley Cup Final in 1998 and won the President&#8217;s Trophy in 2009-10. He lasted as Capitals&#8217; general manager for 17 seasons.<\/p>\n<p>McPhee quickly builds the Golden Knights into a winner as they smartly draft a contending roster straight away. Vegas wins the Pacific Division and reaches the Final in its inaugural season. He wins general manger of the year honours for his quick build of the team. McPhee&#8217;s old team beats the Golden Knights to win their first Stanley Cup.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1950:<\/strong> Stanley Cup hero <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/babanpe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pete Babando<\/a><\/strong> is traded from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Black Hawks<\/a>. Babando won Game 7 of the Final at 8:31 of the second overtime to beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/rangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Rangers<\/a>. He&#8217;s part of a nine-player trade between the rivals. The Pennsylvania native nets 18 goals and 37 points in his first season with Chicago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1990:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> trade <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/z\/zezelpe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter Zezel<\/a><\/strong> and<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lalormi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Lalor<\/a><\/strong> to the Capitals for winger <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/courtge01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Geoff Courtnall<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> sign unrestricted free agent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/francro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ron Francis<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. He helped the team reach the 2002 Stanley Cup Final and was the team&#8217;s GM from 2014-2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/messima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Messier<\/a><\/strong> returns to the Rangers after three seasons with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vancouver Canucks<\/a>. The former captain signs a two-year deal with the club in one of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/sathegl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glen Sather<\/a>&#8216;<\/strong>s first moves in charge. Messier plays four seasons with the team, but the Rangers miss the post-season in all of them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2005:<\/strong> The NHL and NHL Players Association announce a tentative deal to end the lockout that wiped out the 2004-05 season. It&#8217;s a six-year agreement that still needed to be ratified by the players and the owners. The agreement also introduces a hard salary cap for the first time in league history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2009: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemaija01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacques Lemaire<\/a><\/strong> returns for a second coaching stint with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>. He replaces <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/suttebr02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brent Sutter<\/a><\/strong> behind the bench and last two seasons.
