During the NHL\u2019s hiatus, we at Last Word on Hockey are going to look back at each date\u2019s historical significance to the game. We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 11th, featuring Jaromir Jagr<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n

Jaromir Jagr Dealt to Capitals<\/h3>\n

2001:<\/strong> The Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a> trade their long-time star to the Washington Capitals<\/a>. Pittsburgh gets back three prospects from the Washington system in return. Jagr brings his 1,079 points in 806 games with the Penguins to the American capital. The Czech winger scored 439 goals with Pittsburgh and won two Stanley Cups.<\/p>\n

Jagr struggles to match his numbers with the Capitals and spends less than three seasons with the team. He’s eventually dealt to the New York Rangers<\/a> before playing for six other teams. The ageless one scored 766 goals in 1,733 career games.<\/p>\n

Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n

1935:<\/strong> The Detroit Red Wings<\/a> acquire Marty Barry<\/a><\/strong> and Art Giroux<\/a><\/strong> from the Boston Bruins<\/a>. Boston gets Cooney Weiland<\/a><\/strong> and Walt Buswell<\/a><\/strong> in return. Barry helps Detroit wins back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1936 and 1937.<\/p>\n

1983:<\/strong> The Hockey East conference in NCAA men’s hockey is born. Ivy League schools in the Western part of the ECAC paired up with schools like Clarkson University and St. Lawrence University. The Eastern schools of the non-Harvard Boston schools, Providence College and New Hampshire make the new league. They add Maine and UMass-Lowell to the conference shortly after.<\/p>\n

1984:<\/strong> Washington signs defenceman Marc Chorney<\/a><\/strong> as a free agent. He spent the season with the Binghamton Whalers in the AHL after not making the Capitals.<\/p>\n

1994:<\/strong> The Los Angeles Kings<\/a> obtain the rights to free agent Yanic Perreault<\/a><\/strong> from the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>. Toronto gets a fourth-round pick in return.<\/p>\n

1996:<\/strong> The Dallas Stars<\/a> sign free agent Dave Reid<\/a><\/strong> to a contract. He scores 19 goals in the 1996-97 season for the Stars.<\/p>\n

2003:<\/strong> The Maple Leafs sign free agent defenceman Bryan Marchment<\/a><\/strong>. He played last season with the San Jose Sharks<\/a> and Colorado Avalanche<\/a>.<\/p>\n
