Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 8th, featuring <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mogilal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander Mogilny<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mogilal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander Mogilny<\/a> Traded to Canucks<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Vancouver Canucks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/sabres\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buffalo Sabres<\/a> pull off a blockbuster trade. Vancouver gets the Russian forward in exchange for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/p\/pecami01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Peca<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/wilsomi02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Wilson<\/a><\/strong> and first-round pick <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mckeeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jay McKee<\/a><\/strong>. Mogilny scores 19 goals in the lockout-shortened season with the Sabres.<\/p>\n<p>The deal allows Mogilny to reunite with CSKA Moscow teammate <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/burepa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pavel Bure<\/a><\/strong>. They helped form a devastating line along with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fedorse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergei Fedorov<\/a><\/strong> in the late 1980s. Bure and Mogilny have some solid seasons, but they can&#8217;t reclaim the magic of their younger days. Mogilny is traded at the 2002 deadline to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flames\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Flames<\/a> are the big winner after getting <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/i\/iginlja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarome Iginla<\/a><\/strong>. He&#8217;s drafted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Stars<\/a>, but traded for<strong> Joe <span id=\"token-CDC9118E5A674DBF65FB5\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Nieuwendyk<\/span><\/strong> on Dec. 19, 1995.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1988:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> sign free agent defenceman Garry Gallley. He spent just over a season-and-a-half with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/capitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Capitals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> Defence is the name of the game as the 1995 NHL Draft sees blueliners taken with the first three picks. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> take <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/berarbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bryan Berard<\/a><\/strong> with the first pick while <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/reddewa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wade Redden<\/a><\/strong> goes second to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Islanders<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/b\/bergak01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aki Berg<\/a><\/strong> is selected third by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Kings<\/a>. Berard and Redden get swapped after Berard refuses to report to Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/maple-leafs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> acquire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/murphla01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Larry Murphy<\/a><\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>. Pittsburgh get <strong>Dimitri Mironov<\/strong> and a second-round pick in the 1996 NHL Draft.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Blues<\/a> sign free agent forward <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hawerda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dale Hawerchuk<\/a><\/strong>. He played for Buffalo for the last five seasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1996:<\/strong> The Kings sign free agent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/o\/olczyed01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ed Olczyk<\/a><\/strong> to a deal. He goes to Pittsburgh after a trade during the season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> Los Angeles hires <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/t\/tippeda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dave Tippett<\/a><\/strong> as an assistant coach. Tippet helped the Houston Aeros win the IHL title and stays three seasons with the Kings. He&#8217;ll go on to coach the Stars, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/coyotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arizona Coyotes<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmonton Oilers<\/a>. He won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/adamsja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Adams<\/a> Award in 2010 with the Coyotes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carolina Hurricanes<\/a> sign free agent defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/w\/weslegl01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glen Wesley<\/a><\/strong>. Carolina traded him at the deadline to Toronto.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/wild\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Wild<\/a> sign free agent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/r\/rolstbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Rolston<\/a><\/strong>, but doesn&#8217;t debut until 2005-06 because of the lockout.
