We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 7th, featuring <span id=\"token-1BA95B9BF54FE34B72885\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/f\/fetisvi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Viacheslav Fetisov<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"token-1BA95B9BF54FE34B72885\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\">Viacheslav Fetisov<\/span> Comes to New Jersey<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1989:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Devils<\/a> show a pair of Soviet defencemen to the media. Fetisov finally comes to the states after years of lobbying the USSR government. He was drafted in the 1983 NHL Draft, but is denied an opportunity in North America.<\/p>\n<p>The Devils also introduce <span id=\"token-BE8867342F57DBE0BA4AA\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/starise01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergei Starikov<\/a><\/strong> at the news conference. However, he only plays 16 games with the team. Both players help usher in a wave of Russian players to the NHL. <span id=\"token-CFD8DDB0A34910AF80986\" class=\"token token-hyperLink\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kasatal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexei Kasatonov<\/a><\/strong>, who is Fetisov&#8217;s defence partner, is one of the early arrivals and plays 257 games in New Jersey. <\/span><\/span>Fetisov is traded to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a> in 1994-95 and wins two Stanley Cups as part of the Russian Five.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1954: Tommy Ivan<\/strong> is named the new general manager of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blackhawks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Blackhawks<\/a>. Ivan was the Red Wings coach for the last seven seasons and replaces <strong>Bill Tobin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1980:<\/strong> Veteran goalie<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cheevge01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gerry Cheevers<\/a><\/strong> announces his retirement. He&#8217;s immediately named head coach of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins,<\/a> as he replaces <strong>Harry Sinden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1983:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/hurricanes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hartford Whalers<\/a> name <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/e\/evansja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jack Evans<\/a><\/strong> as their new head coach. He replaces <strong>John Cuniff<\/strong> behind the bench.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong> Detroit signs free agent defenceman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howema02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Howe<\/a><\/strong>, who plays his final three years with the club. Mark&#8217;s father was the legendary<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howego01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordie Howe<\/a><\/strong>, who had a distinguished career with the team.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/flyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> sign free agent defenceman<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/s\/samuekj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kjell Samuelsson<\/a><\/strong> for another stint. Samuelsson had played the last three seasons with the rival <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997:<\/strong> The Flyers pick<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cashmwa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayne Cashman<\/a><\/strong> as the team&#8217;s new head coach. He replaces the recently fired <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrate01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Murray<\/a><\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/actonke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keith Acton<\/a><\/strong> is named as associate coach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/avalanche\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a> name <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/q\/quennjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joel Quenneville<\/a><\/strong> as their new head coach. He replaces <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/g\/granato01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Granato<\/a><\/strong> behind the bench, who stays on as an assistant. Colorado finishes with 95 points in each of the three seasons that Quenneville is in charge. However, he leaves in May 2008 to join the Blackhawks.
