We\u2019ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here\u2019s our look at this date in hockey history for July 5th, featuring<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcdavco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connor McDavid<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Hockey History<\/h2>\n<h3>Connor McDavid Signs Extension With Oilers<\/h3>\n<p><strong>2017:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/oilers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Edmonton Oilers<\/a> top pick from the 2015 NHL Draft inks an eight-year, $100 million deal. McDavid helped Edmonton reached the post-season for the first time in about a decade in 2016-17. The former Erie Otters star gets 30 goals and 100 points on his way to the Hart Trophy for league. MVP.<\/p>\n<p>McDavid&#8217;s new contract starts in the 2018-19 season and he reaches 100 points two more times. He finishes the current season 2019-20 with 97 points after he&#8217;s sidelined with an injury. The current COVID-19 pandemic also halts his chance at a fourth straight 100-point season.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Notable Events<\/h3>\n<p><strong>1978: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/howelha01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harry Howell<\/a><\/strong> takes over as head coach for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota North Stars<\/a>. He replaces <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/n\/nannelo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lou Nanne<\/a><\/strong>, who becomes the team&#8217;s new general manger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1979:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/bruins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Bruins<\/a> hire <strong>Fred Creighton<\/strong> as their new head coach to replace <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/c\/cherrdo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Don Cherry<\/a><\/strong>. Creighton lasts only 73 games before he&#8217;s fired after not getting along with <strong>Harry Sinden<\/strong>. Cherry led Boston to the Stanley Cup Final twice, but the B&#8217;s didn&#8217;t win a title. His last game in charge was the 1979 semifinal, which was known as the &#8220;Too Many Men&#8221; on the ice game. The Bruins lose to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/canadiens\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montreal Canadiens<\/a> in overtime of that Game 7. Cherry coaches the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/devils\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Rockies<\/a> for one season before going into broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> The<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/islanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> New York Islanders<\/a> hire <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/m\/milbumi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Milbury<\/a><\/strong> as their new head coach. He adds general manager duties on Dec. 12 and stays with the team in some form until June 2006. Milbury goes 56-111-24 in his three terms as coach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/blue-jackets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a> name <strong>Dave King<\/strong> as their first coach in team history. He lasts two-and-a-half seasons before being fired in Jan. 2003.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2013: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/a\/alfreda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Alfredsson<\/a><\/strong> signs a contract to play with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/red-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Red Wings<\/a>. The Swedish forward leaves the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/senators\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ottawa Senators<\/a> after 17-years in Canada&#8217;s capital. He won the Calder Trophy for top rookie in 1996 and was captain from 1999-2013. Alfredsson also led the Sens to a Final appearance in 2007. He plays one year in Detroit before retiring with Ottawa in Dec. 2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/i\/iginlja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarome Iginla<\/a><\/strong> signs the Bruins after a stint with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonhockey.com\/nhl-teams\/penguins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/a>.
